Update from the Mayor Mayor Gavin Buckley City Council Remarks 26 July 2021 - 7 p.m. City Council Chambers Good evening! It’s our last meeting of the summer and I hope we all get a chance to get some work done over the August break and maybe squeeze in some time with family and friends. Speaking of time with family and friends, I have been very honored over the last few months, as the city moved toward reopening after the pandemic, to be invited to a number of ribbon cuttings for new businesses. I have been joined by members of the council and other elected officials to celebrate these moments. As Mayor and as a businessman, these are special moments for me, especially as I talk to the owners and learn why they have decided to entrust their future success to Annapolis. I want to thank Brian Cahalan in the mayor’s office, and our office of Economic Development for giving these businesses the tools they need to make the leap to choosing our City for the next phase of their business plan. I also want to thank the individual councilmembers for working with my staff to set up these ribbon cutting ceremonies for the businesses in their ward. == Tonight at 9 p.m., the filing deadline will close for city municipal elections. I want to give a shout out to our Board of Supervisors of Elections, our chair Eileen Leahy along with members Briayna Cuffie and outgoing member Cliff Myers. Serving on a board is a volunteer position and they put themselves out there to help us run our elections to the best of their ability. For the candidates who are putting themselves forward, we thank you for being civic-minded and working to make our community a better place. I look forward to a healthy debate on the issues. I hope that Annapolis can showcase an open and honest discussion of ideas in the City where our founders met under the Liberty Tree. City of Annapolis Page 2 City Council Special Meeting Minutes - Final July 26, 2021 == Mark your calendars for 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 7 at City Dock when the United States Postal Service will unveil the Thomas Point Lighthouse stamp - it is one in a series of five “forever” lighthouse stamps the Post Office has decided to honor. The first day issue will be in New Jersey on the 6th and then Annapolis will be a second day of issue location. The postal service will have a kiosk at City Dock so that you can buy stamps and also get a special commemorative cancel. This is a big deal for a City-owned property! I want to give a shout out to John Potvin, the Lighthouse Society and our Postal District Manager Le Gretta Goodwin. As many of you know, the Thomas Point lighthouse is one of a dozen screwpile lighthouses that dotted the Chesapeake Bay starting in the 19th Century. In 1999, Thomas Point was designated a National Historic Landmark. In 2004, the United States Department of the Interior transferred the property to the City of Annapolis during the tenure of Mayor Ellen Moyer. A number of volunteers have worked tirelessly to restore her and the Chesapeake Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society along with the Annapolis Maritime Museum conduct interpreted public tours during the summer. I know stamp collectors from around the region will converge on Annapolis on the 7th to celebrate with us. Please join us at City Dock. == That is also the same day as the Rotary Club’s annual Crabfeast. Again this year it will be a pick up event - no in-person dining at Navy Stadium - but the money raised from this event helps good causes all around our city. If you’re in the mood for crabs, order some up at annapolisrotary.org and enjoy! == One of the ways we get to a greener Annapolis is to try to help our residents and visitors be more responsible on an individual basis. When we can convince the majority of people not to buy single-use plastic water bottles and instead to refill a reusable water bottle, we can make a difference. And that is why we partner with Annapolis Green on a number of consumer oriented Plastic Free Annapolis initiatives to educate people and eventually change their habits. You may have seen signs for “No Butts in the Bay,” a campaign to keep cigarette butts out of the street where they become part of the channel of runoff and end up in the Bay where they endanger wildlife and release toxins in the water. The new butt bins encourage smokers to dispose of cigarette butts in appropriate receptacles which also helps create a cleaner, more beautiful City. == Now let’s talk about all of the other great things happening in our City. Put these on your calendar. We have some parades coming up in the fall. The St. Patrick’s Day parade, which is usually in March, will take place in mid-September with a weekend of events. Annapolis Pride will take place at the end of October. The Military Bowl has already reached out City of Annapolis Page 3 City Council Special Meeting Minutes - Final July 26, 2021 about the parade and game which take place between Christmas and New Years. These are all signs that Annapolis is slowly returning to normal. In addition, we have recreation programs and arts events. The Arts in Public Places Commission has scheduled concerts at City Dock through October. These music and dancing events have folks coming out to enjoy free concerts and dancing events in one of our most iconic and beautiful locations. In addition, Rec and Parks and AIPPC work with Greater Parole Community Association to put on concerts at Chambers Park on Friday nights. These are fun and family-friendly events. Over at Truxtun Park, the Kenneth R. Dunn Municipal Pool has lap swim, aqua aerobics and inclusive swim and splash ADA-compliant exercise programming. Pip Moyer has resumed fitness classes as well as ongoing kids camp offerings. None of this would be possible without the majority of adults and teens who got vaccinated against the COVID virus. I want to thank those individuals for doing their duty to protect our public health. In a recent call with the health department, we learned that nearly all hospitalizations for covid are unvaccinated people. The virus is still out there. The Delta variant is contagious and, for unvaccinated people, is a real danger. Part of the compact of being a member of a civilized society is caring enough about the people in your community to take vaccines. The Greatest Generation eradicated small pox and polio because of successful vaccination campaigns. The COVID vaccines are now widely available and safe.
