Update from the Mayor Mayor Gavin Buckley City Council Remarks 19 September 2022 - 7pm City Council chambers Good evening. I want to thank everyone who made the Annapolis Songwriter’s Festival such a huge success this past weekend. Our City was buzzing with musical activity at venues all over town. I got to several performances and the energy and engagement was great. I want to acknowledge the work of Kyle Muhlhouser and Ram’s Head. It takes a lot of money to pull off an event like this, but they paid attention to the details and made it the success it was. These kinds of events bring people in from all over - to fill hotel rooms, to shop and to dine. That is a boon for our local business community. It is a special thing for Annapolis to have an identifying music festival. And this one is paired with another great maritime town - Key West. More than 70 percent of music performances at the festival were free, with local venues and local musicians getting to play along headliners who came in from Nashville, New Orleans and other musical cities. The organizers, the musicians, the staff, City staff, and the community shared the energy and love at this inaugural event for Annapolis and I want to thank everyone who made it seamless and smooth. I look forward to seeing this event grow to even greater success in years to come. == The music continues this weekend. Stop by City Dock this Sunday, from 6 to 10 pm, for the City Dock Fiesta with live music and dancing - and it’s all free! == Last Saturday we celebrated the Safeway Fall Festival, in coordination with our Office of Community Services and in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. There were music performances, food and children’s activities and wonderful coordination with the businesses and organizations in the Forest Drive corridor, including the American Legion Cook-Pinkney Post, Safeway, Center of Help, Annapolis High School, Annapolis Police Foundation and many more. There are events scheduled throughout the month, which will culminate in our Day of the Dead Festival on Saturday, October 29, from 4-9pm. We swore in a new officer last week and we are swearing in another new officer right here in council chambers on Thursday! == As part of our Choice Neighborhoods Initiative with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, the City and the Housing Authority, members of the Eastport community are invited to participate in a community workshop on Wednesday. The meeting is open to the public at the Eastport Community Center and begins at 6:30pm. At the meeting, presenters will review neighborhood information gathered during the recent resident survey, get a better understanding of demographic information for the neighborhood, and begin to further the conversation on the re-imagining of Eastport Terrace and Harbour House. The Choice Neighborhoods process kicked off in the spring, with regular, virtual Task Force meetings, but this is the first in-person meeting. The 100 foot by 60 foot “diversity” mural, on the side of the Arundel Center, was painted by Comacell Brown and Cindy Fletcher Holden. I will be there, along with County Executive Steuart Pittman, for a dedication and ribbon cutting. == Between now and Oct. 10, our next City Council meeting, there are a few more things to highlight: ● The Fannie Lou HAMER awards will be presented at Maryland Hall on Sunday, Oct. 1st. 25 Annapolis and Anne Arundel County women will be honored for their contributions to our community, including three women who make a difference right here in City government: Alderwoman Eleanor Tierney, Public Information Officer Mitchelle Stephenson, and Community Services Officer, Erica Griswald. Big congratulations to them and to all 25 recipients! ● Earlier that same day, from noon to 3pm, DragonFest will take place in Eastport. At this event, the Annapolis Dragonboat Club will kick off breast cancer awareness month with an event to raise money for “Bosom Buddies,” an Annapolis breast cancer charity. Before we get on with the meeting, I want to remind folks about two other great events this weekend - on Saturday is the Kunte Kinte Festival at City Dock with performances, food, vendors and much more.
