Update from the Mayor Mayor Gavin Buckley City Council Remarks Jan. 9, 2023 - 7 p.m. - City Council Chambers Happy New Year everyone, I look forward to 2023 being a great year for the City of Annapolis! I’d like to start by thanking all City staff who worked over the Christmas/New Year period to deal with emergencies, keep services running, and support events like the Military Bowl and New Year’s Eve. Like the DPW crew, who we recognized tonight, these workers were out in the winter cold and away from family during holidays, to keep things running smoothly in our city. The City Council, and everyone in our community, thanks you all for your service. == Earlier this evening I was proud to help launch a new boxing program for middle and high school youth. The program is called ‘Cut Difference Boxing’ and will be run out of the Pip Moyer Recreation Center. It will provide a great opportunity for local teens to develop fitness, learn new skills, and make new friends and I’d like to thank everyone from the Annapolis Police Department, the Police Foundation and the US Naval Academy who helped get this program off the ground. == This week we welcome all newly elected, and re-elected, representatives from across Maryland here to our beautiful capital city for the 445th session of the Maryland General Assembly. On Wednesday, the City, in partnership with the Maryland Municipal League, will host a legislative reception at the Gov. Calvert House to welcome legislators, their staff, lobbyists and advocates to Annapolis. They will be here for the next 90 days, which always brings business and other benefits to our community. == Next week, on Wednesday January 18, Gov.-elect Wes Moore and Lt. Gov. -elect Aruna Miller will be sworn in at the State House. This is a major event and requires tight security, so there will be disruptions to parking and traffic downtown throughout the day. Please give yourselves extra time to get around. If you plan on attending, park at Park Place and take the free downtown shuttle to State Circle. From there, you can walk less than one block to the inaugural festivities at Lawyer’s Mall. We look forward to working with Governor Moore and again congratulate him and Lt. Gov. Miller on their win last November. == City of Annapolis Page 2 Printed on 2/14/2023 City Council Regular Meeting Minutes - Final January 9, 2023 A reminder that next week, City offices will be closed on Monday, January 16, to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It’s a day we can reflect on his courage and sacrifice and a good time to consider service to the community by volunteering that day or using the day to start a new volunteer routine. There are a number of worthwhile organizations that could use a helping hand. Mentor a child, feed the hungry, work in a community garden, there are limitless options to spread love in this community. There are numerous events planned to honor Dr King’s legacy, including a dinner this Friday and a breakfast on the 16th. More information about those can be found online. == Lastly, I would like to thank the coordinators of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dinner who will be honoring a number of people in our community for their service, including our very own Alderman Gay who is receiving the “We Share the Dream Award.” The committee is generously giving me an award as well, the Morris Blum Humanitarian Award, for our work saving Elktonia/Carr’s Beach. I want to thank the Dr. King dinner organizers and congratulate all 13 of the honorees. And now, let’s get on with the meeting… B. SA-23-23 Grant - Police - Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention. State Grant Revenue - 25,000. State Grant Expense - 25,000. This supplemental allocation appropriates $25,000 from the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention for the Gun Violence Reduction grant. This grant will pay for overtime costs related to reducing gun related crime. This grant was not included in the FY2023 budget and there is no match required.
