Update from the Mayor Mayor Gavin Buckley Council Remarks 7 p.m. May 22 2023 City Council Chambers Good evening everyone. This week is a special time in Annapolis. It is Commissioning City of Annapolis Page 1 City Council Special Meeting Minutes - Final May 22, 2023 Week for the US Naval Academy, one of the busiest and most significant weeks in the year. To the Class of 2023 - congratulations on your achievement and very best wishes as you commence your career of service. Congratulations also to all those who’ve supported and guided you along the way - your professors, coaches, mentors, parents, families and friends. We hope you all have a great week and, wherever life takes you, we hope you will think of Annapolis as home and come back and visit as often as you can. Commissioning Week events include the Blue Angels fly over - they will be practicing on Tuesday and performing on Wednesday. Formal graduation ceremonies will take place on Friday. These are busy days in Annapolis with lots of visitors moving about town. Information about traffic and road closures is available in the Commissioning Week Press Release on the City website. Please plan your travel accordingly and allow extra time. ============ This Saturday the Kenneth R Dunn pool at Truxtun Park will open for the season. This great facility has a lap pool, a splash pool, and a slide pool, so there is something for everyone. Come along and check it out if you haven't already done so. There are a number of classes available throughout the season as well including water aerobics, and swim classes for kids, teens and adults. I wish everyone a fun and safe swim season! ====================== Next Monday, May 29, the City of Annapolis will host the annual Memorial Day parade. The Parade will step off from the corner of Amos Garrett and West Street at 10 a.m and will make its way around Church Circle, and down Main Street to City Dock. There will be rolling road closures as the parade moves through town. Please stay alert to directions from Annapolis Police. Of course Memorial Day is the day we remember all those who have given their lives while serving in the military. It is a day for us to reflect on the cost of freedom and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. City offices, the Stanton Center and the Pip Moyer Rec Center will all be closed. City of Annapolis refuse collection scheduled for Monday will move to Tuesday and Tuesday collection will move to Wednesday. Annapolis Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule with the Purple Route running from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. ADA Paratransit services will also be available within this time period. =============== Looking ahead to Saturday June 3rd, Annapolis will celebrate our annual Pride Parade and Festival. The Pride Parade will step off at 12 noon, also from Amos Garret and West St, and make its way along to People’s Park on Calvert St. Following the parade, the Pride festival will take place on Inner West Street between Church Circle and Calvert Streets. The theme of this year’s parade and festival is “Express Yourself: Protecting LGBTQIA+ Youth.” Pride is a wonderful day that brings our community together in a celebration of love and acceptance - something we need more of.
