Update from the Mayor Today is a sad day in Annapolis, in Maryland and in America. Yet again, our neighbors, members of our community, have been senselessly gunned down. This time during a birthday celebration. City of Annapolis Page 1 Printed on 7/11/2023 City Council Regular Meeting Minutes - Final June 12, 2023 Last night we lost three people, Christian Segovia, 25, and a father and son, Nicolas Mireles, 55, and Mario Mireles Ruiz, 27. Three more people are hospitalized. Thankfully, the wounded are expected to recover. I would like for us to take time tonight to hold all six of these individuals and their families and friends, who have suffered unimaginable trauma, in our hearts with a moment of silence. [moment of silence] Annapolis isn’t immune from the impacts of gun violence that plague America in urban, suburban and rural communities. As a Mayor, it leaves me both heartbroken and furious. We have all the resources we could ask for from the county, state, and the federal government. We are taking full advantage of those supports. As of this morning, the suspect has been charged and is held without bond. None of that brings relief to the grief this has brought to Annapolis. I thank Governor Wes Moore and our state delegation, County Executive Steuart Pittman and our county partners, as well as federal, state and local law enforcement. June is Gun Violence Prevention Month. I thank the City’s No Harm Team who are working with Mom’s Demand Action and the Anne Arundel County Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, and all those in our community who are working for change. At a recent community meeting with all these groups, we proclaimed Gun Violence Prevention Month in Annapolis. Tonight we will do so again as part of our official City Council record. Though our hearts are broken by another senseless tragedy, we will not stop fighting and advocating for a different, less violent, more loving, and more peaceful society. As a City, we can keep working to get illicit guns off the street. We can continue and expand our violence prevention efforts in partnership with the County. We can provide support and resources to communities in need. We can work with people to help them with mental health challenges. What we can NOT do is make other states or the federal government legislate and enforce background checks, gun sales, and red flag laws. Without federal intervention in gun safety, we are only as safe as the state with the most permissive gun laws. The suspect in this case is being held without bond. He is charged with multiple counts. I thank States Attorney Anne Colt Leitiss for her team’s swift work in bringing charges. Annapolis Police and partners will likely have more to say in the coming days and weeks as the investigation continues. I thank our police officers, EMT and other first responders who were at the scene so quickly last night. This tragic event comes hard on the heels of the fifth commemoration of this City’s first mass shooting at the Capital Gazette on June 28, 2018. We will commemorate and honor both victims and survivors of gun violence. The ceremony will commence at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 28. I hope you will join us for this solemn event. Please call. == It is hard to continue and focus on every day matters when we are dealing with grief and tragedy as a community but there are some other things I need to draw your attention to tonight. So please forgive me for switching gears a little to talk about some events coming up in the next week or so. First up we have the grand reopening of the Hillman garage on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on the rooftop of the new garage. We’ll have live music, VIPs, giveaways, refreshments and, best of all, free parking through Monday, June 19. Please come out to see the new garage and support our downtown businesses. == This weekend also brings Juneteenth celebrations to the city. On Friday night, there is a gala, which is sold out. On Saturday form 12 noon, the Juneteenth Parade will start at City Dock and follow a reverse parade route to Maryland Hall. After the parade, the Juneteenth Festival will be held at Bates Athletic Fields until 9:30 p.m. There is no charge to watch the parade or enter the festival. === Lastly, I would like to offer congratulations to all of our Class of 2023 graduates. My son, Dash, graduated over the weekend from Annapolis High School, but I know we have graduates from public and private schools and I wish these graduates all the success in whatever comes next in their lives.
