PETITIONS, REPORTS & COMMUNICATIONS City of Annapolis Page 1 City Council Special Meeting Minutes - Final October 23, 2023 A. Update from the Mayor Good evening. I want to share the sad news that Theodore Gray, a retired mason with the Department of Public Works, recently passed away. Mr. Gray retired from the City in April of 2016. His service will be held tomorrow at Lasting Tributes on Bestgate Road. We send our best wishes to the family and his friends. == As we meet tonight, I also want to acknowledge that there are people in other parts of the world, suffering and dying in the midst of conflict and war. Our hearts go out to them. We hope and pray for an end to conflict so that all children everywhere can grow up in peace, and with dignity and freedom. Sometimes we can become consumed with our local problems and different points of view. But seeing the suffering in other parts of the world reminds us how lucky we are. Let it also be a reminder to us that with goodwill, constructive dialogue and a little compromise, almost every problem can be solved and every difference resolved. As we debate issues and make decisions for our community tonight, let us renew our commitment to working together constructively and peacefully, with understanding and tolerance, for the good of all our community. == Here are some events coming up in the City: ● Day of the Dead is Saturday at Maryland Hall. Come by for food, musical performances, vendors, face painting and more. ● Trunk or Treat is also on Saturday at Pip Moyer. This family-friendly event will include a costume parade with trick or treating, hayrides, food, crafts and more. ● The Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival is also on Saturday. This is at City Dock and includes a showcase of performers, food and talks, including presentations on genealogy. ● On Sunday, Bob Woodward and Wes Moore will be the special guests at St. John’s “Great Conversations.” Previous events have included Cal Ripken, Jr., Judy Woodruf, Tom Brokaw and Admiral Mike Mullen. ● Next Thursday, we’ll have the Choice Neighborhoods celebration at Eastport United Methodist Church. That’s November 2 from 6:30 to 8. This event is open to the public and includes refreshments. Come out to celebrate the two years of work the community has put in to the transformation plan for reimagining Eastport Terrace and Harbour House! ● Sometime in early November, we are still finalizing the date, we’ll have a public presentation for City Dock. This is a continuation of the rollout that we have done at City Dock Action committee a few weeks back and the City Council work session last Thursday. At this special public event, we will also roll out our public messaging campaign to inform you of the construction timeline and staging of this massive public infrastructure project. ● And lastly, I’ll be joining Fleet Reserve Club on November 11 - that’s a Saturday - for a Veteran’s Day ceremony at Memorial Circle in downtown. The public is invited to attend this observance. As a reminder, City offices will be closed in observance of Veteran’s Day on Friday, November 10. B.
