Special Called Session

The Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia met this date in a special called
session. Present: Mayor Girtz; Commissioners Davenport, Link, Wright, Denson, Houle, Myers, and
Hamby. Absent: Commissioners Edwards and Thornton.
The purpose of the meeting was to approve a resolution requesting a call for a special election for
the purpose of filling the vacancy in the office of Commissioner District 2 of the Unified Government of
Athens-Clarke County.
Public input
There was none.
New business – Consider under suspension of Rules
A motion was made by Commissioner Houle, seconded by Commissioner Link, to suspend Rules
of Commission for consideration of one item of new business. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
A motion was made by Commissioner Hamby, seconded by Commissioner Myers, to adopt the
following resolution. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
A RESOLUTION REQUESTING A CALL FOR A SPECIAL ELECTION FOR THE PURPOSE OF FILLING
THE VACANCY IN THE OFFICE OF COMMISSIONER OF DISTRICT 2 OF THE UNIFIED GOVERNMENT
OF ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, Commissioner Mariah Parker has submitted their resignation as
Commissioner for District 2 of the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County; and
WHEREAS, the remaining term of such now vacant Commission position is more than 180 days
from the date of the creation of such vacancy; and
WHEREAS, Section 2-106 (b) of the Charter of the Unified Government of Athens-
Clarke County requires that a special election be held to fill such position if such vacancy will continue for
more than 180 days; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to O.C.G.A. Sec. 21-2-540 (c)(1)(A)(i), the Mayor and
Commission desire that such special election be held on the third Tuesday in March of 2023—
i.e. Tuesday, March 21, 2023—for the following reasons:
1. To provide that the special election to fill the anticipated vacancy in District 2 will be held
using the new Commission District lines for District 2, given that we are now firmly past the
implementation of those lines; and
2. To provide any prospective candidate(s) time to consider whether they desire to serve and
time to prepare for the election;
NOW THEREFORE, the Mayor and Commission of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia hereby
resolve that the Board of Elections of Athens-Clarke County is hereby requested to issue the call for a
special election for the purpose of filling the vacancy in the position of Commissioner for District 2 of the
Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County to be held on March 21, 2023, using the new district lines.
A motion was made by Commissioner Wright, seconded by Commissioner Houle, to adjourn.
The motion passed by unanimous vote.
The meeting adjourned at 5:52 p.m.
