ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
SPECIAL SESSION
May 11, 2022
The Zoning Board of Adjustments of the City of Athens, Texas met in Special Session on Friday,
May 11, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. in the Civic Hall of the Cain Center, 915 S Palestine St, Athens, Texas
with the following members present constituting a quorum, to-wit: Thomas Faulk, Bill Priestley,
Mamie Stafford, and Shannon Traxson.
Director of Development Services Audrey Sloan, Development Coordinator Sheila Garrett,
Administrative Clerk Noemi Lopez, and Steve Grant were also present.
Chairperson Faulk called the meeting to order.

CONSIDER APPROVING THE MINUTES FOR THE FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 2022,
REGULAR SESSION
Vice Chairperson Traxson made a motion to approve the minutes as written. The motion was
seconded by Member Stafford and passed unanimously.
PUBLIC HEARING CONCERNING A REQUEST FROM STEVE GRANT FOR A
VARIANCE FROM THE REAR AND SIDE YARD SETBACK REQUIREMENTS FOR
AN ACCESSORY BUILDING LOCATED AT 411 PARK DRIVE, ALSO KNOWN AS
LOTS 22 & 23 OF THE HAWN ADDITION, T. PARMER SURVEY, ABSTRACT 782.
OWNERS: STEVE & CLAIRE GRANT
Chairperson Faulk opened the public hearing. Sloan described the location of the property and the
request for variance. Steve Grant spoke about the request to allow for an addition to the existing
garage located in the rear yard. After a lengthy discussion, Chairperson Faulk closed the public
hearing.

The board continued to discuss the request. A motion was made by Vice Chairperson Traxson to
approve the variance request. The motion was seconded by Member Stafford and passed
unanimously.

Pursuant to Texas Government Code section 551.007, members of the public may speak on an agenda
item during the public communication section of the meeting or at the time the agenda item is called for
discussion by the Zoning Board of Adjustment Chairperson. Speakers shall be given three (3) minutes to
speak. A speaker needing a translator and/or interpreter may be given six (6) minutes to speak. Criticism
of city employees or staff is prohibited. Those wishing to address the Zoning Board of Adjustment
regarding an item not on the agenda must be a citizen, property owner or business owner of the city of
Athens. Comments on such non-agenda items shall be limited to three minutes. The Zoning Board of
Adjustment will not comment on items not on the agenda; however, the Zoning Board of Adjustment may
refer the item to city staff for research, resolution or referral of the matter to the Zoning Board of
Adjustment as a future agenda item.
This facility is wheelchair accessible and accessible parking spaces are available. Requests for additional
accommodations or interpretive services must be made 48 hours prior to any meeting. Please contact the
