Urbandale Neighborhood Planning Council #5 Council Minutes – August 12, 2013 Meeting at Christ United Methodist Church 65 North Bedford Road Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by Robert Whitfield, chair. Attendance: Robert Whitfield, Chair; David Moore; Stan Beckwith; Barbara Beckwith; Dale Stratton; Mary Lou Ramon; Deborah L. Gregory; Joe Britvec; Dennis McKinley; Officer Shawn O’Bryant; Carl Brockman; Fred Bachman; Deborah Owens; Hal Longman; Brett Myers; Kathy Antaya; Patricia Graw; Dennis Shedd A moment of silence was observed for the loss of Nate Zanotti. Previous Minutes: July 2013 minutes were approved by voice vote. Correspondence: N/A Police Report: Officer Shawn O’Bryant reviewed crimes in the Urbandale area and discussed classifications of such crimes as inquired by the council. Guest Speaker: Dr. Brett Myers from Elements Chiropractic Clinic discussed how he began being a chiropractor in Battle Creek before opening his practice in Kalamazoo. Commissioner’s Report: May Lou Ramon discussed the Columbia Business Improvement District and its probable dissolution. The cost to be a member runs a business from $200 to $20,000 per year. School Report: Deborah Gregory discussed the Math & Science Center grand opening on August 22, 2013. Questions were also answered in reference to the Tuck Pointing taking place on the original section of the Battle Creek Central High School. Code Report: Dennis McKinley fielded questions and discussed the 3 demolitions to take place in the Urbandale area over the next several weeks. Membership: Josh Fausey; Darlene Mayo; Mason Mayo had excused absences Beautiful Battle Creek Award: 139 Broadway Blvd as reported by Dale Stratton Old Business: The following Committees were established: Nominating Committee: Fred Bachman & Dale Stratton Speaker Committee: Deb Owens Membership Committee: Carl Brockman & Deborah Gregory New Business: The speaker for September will be Brett Myers from Leila Arboretum. The council moved and supported the addition of two new members as follows: Kathy Antaya & Patricia Graw (2) Public Comment: Kathy Antaya & Patricia Graw invited the council to participate in the Urbandale Community Vegetable Garden located at Leila Arboretum. The Community Garden has been a project since 2010. This is the 4th summer that vegetables have been harvested to increase the amount of healthy food for the residents of our community. Excess vegetables are donated to Bedford Manor. There are 35 different families that have vegetable plots in the Community Garden.
