MEETING MINUTES URBANDALE NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING COUNCIL – NPC 5 (Christ United Methodist Church, 65 Bedford Rd) Second Monday @ 7:00 p.m. MINUTES 3-10-25 Submited by Heather Straton 1. Call to Order & Welcome Kathy Antaya called to order @ 7:05pm 2. Chair Notes/Announcements/Correspondence: Kathy A.—long�me NPC5 member Terry Lancaster passed away, he was an avid community supporter, especially in Urbandale. His wife thanks the NPC for their support. Possible future speakers men�oned--Regina from Summit Point and the Share Center. TBA. Kathy put out an ask for folks interested in taking on organizing monthly speakers. 5. Addi�ons or Dele�ons to the Agenda: none 6. Police Report: Officer Cecil Rose—not much out of the ordinary to report other than a recent raid where guns were seized. Officer Rose explained that recovered guns get sent to the state to be destroyed if unclaimed. Discussion: Kris�n Blood warned of an up�ck of reckless motorcycles already. 7. Guest Speaker: Jordan Kellicut from the American Red Cross-Kalamazoo. Spoke about the Smoke Detector program where they will install smoke alarms at no cost, including accessible devices for hearing impaired. The Red Cross is seeking volunteers to help go door to door to sign folks up for smoke alarm installs. Goal of installing 200 alarms in the area. Canvasing is on May 3. Contact Red Cross for more info. Discussion: Sara S. asked about servicing alarms placed previously—Jordan said to call Red Cross to replace them, they will not service them, but they will replace them--they last 10 years. 8. Commitee Reports: (Comments limited to 3 min per topic) a. School: None b. Code Report: Eric Morris reported the normal junk and trash enforcements-nothing unusual. He announced the hiring of a new code compliance officer with focus on council #3. Eric re-enforced previous member concerns about the placement of smoke alarms in homes by confirming that there is no code regula�on for the height at which a detector is placed, you do not need one in the kitchen, but you do need one in each sleeping room, and at least one on each floor of a building.  c. Public Comments: Pastor Gladney from Bethlehem Temple in Springfield introduced himself and thanked us for allowing him to join to know what is going on in the community as many of his parishioners live in this area and do not have an NPC. Mary B. asked Officer Rose about counterfeit bills. Officer Rose warned of gi� card and air quality tes�ng scams recently. b. Members Comments: Nancy H. asked about radon and Sharlene V. explained mi�ga�on vents. Catherine L. reminded of May 6 elec�on for BCPS improvements with zero increase milage and March 26 board mee�ng to discuss. Robert W. asked about new construc�on and Catherine L. explained the Teaching Lab for the Calhoun Intermediate District. Cheryl R. men�oned March 17th event at Kool Center. Kathy A. explained the no�ce in the water bill once again that it is something you should respond to—they are trying to help you. Kris�n B. announced credit union on Bedford and Michigan to open end of month. Robert W. asked the group if anyone could get him in direct contact with Jessica LaCosse.
