Sustainable BC Committee

City of Battle Creek Sustainable BC Committee Dept. Public Works, 150 S. Kendall Room 204 Monday, May 20, 2019, 1:30pm The purpose of this Committee is to increase the City's efforts to incorporate environmentally responsible, cost effective policy in the planning, administration and economic development of its built infrastructure and natural resources. The Committee may make recommendations to the City Commission for their consideration and will be available as a resource on sustainability policy. MINUTES Call to Order – 1:30pm MEMBER’S PRESENT – Andy Helmboldt, Sue Anderson, Kathy Antaya, Sarah Kelly, Commissioner Kate Flores, and Kurt Tribett Approval of Minutes – April 2019 – Additions or Deletions to Agenda – No quorum. The Committee will approve the minutes at the next meeting. Special Presentation - B-Cycle with Devon Gibson – Devon reported on the status of the B-Cycle bike rental program in the City of Battle Creek. Mr. Gibson noted they are trying to improve ridership, but they had 466 rides last year. Mr. Gibson mentioned each station has approximately four bikes and they are five dollars for a 24-hour period. Mr. Gibson spoke about future places to locate the B-Cycle stations. Ms. Flores mentioned speaking to transit to talk about more bike stations. A discussion ensued about reports and the timeframe for reports. Mr. Gibson discussed the flexibility of the units and where to possibly locate more. Reports - City energy efficiency activities – Kurt Tribett noted the Water Treatment plant is changing some light bulbs and looking into some water filtration ideas. Kurt Tribbett noted the water treatment plant has out for bid the Radon, Iron, & Manganese Removal Facility Improvements project. This project will replace filter beds, automate back washing, provide filtration bypassing, and improve HVAC, mechanical equipment, valves, and aesthetics along with energy savings with adding VFD to low service pumps and lighting replacement. This work will lend itself to future filtration processes that will be proactive measures towards filtering out PFOA, PFOA and other contaminates if they become present in the future. Currently, there are no known contaminates in the drinking water that the city or EGLE (formerly MDEQ) has concerns with, but this would be a preventative measure as the Verona Well Field is the city's only water source. Soft water would be an added benefit from the future filtration processes being considered. - Environmental Programs update – Sarah Kelly passed out information on recycling. Ms. Kelly also handed out Calhoun County’s Solid Waste Annual Report. Ms. Kelly updated the Committee on the results from Recycle-rama. - Planning updates – Eric Feldt spoke about the Non-Motorized Transportation Plan. Mr.  Feldt mentioned the comment/survey cards and the workshops that have been held. - City Commission updates - None Sustainability Plan: Sue Anderson mentioned wanting to keep working on the Plan and making stronger language. Ms. Anderson mentioned addressing climate change.
