The purpose of this Committee is to increase the City's efforts to incorporate environmentally responsible,
cost effective policy in the planning, administration and economic development of its built infrastructure
and natural resources. The Committee may make recommendations to the City Commission for their
consideration and will be available as a resource on sustainability policy.
MINUTES
Call to Order – 1:03pm
Attendance – Mike Myszka, Comm. Susan Anderson, Kathy Antaya, Susan Baldwin, Andy
Helmboldt, Kristen Blood (via phone), Liz Paul, Comm Behnke was present from 1:10pm to
1:25pm.
Staff- Eric Feldt, Jacob Schacht, Kylie, Todd Gerber
Approval of Minutes – April and May 2019 – Kathy Antaya made a motion to approve both the
April and May 2019 minutes, seconded by Mike Myszka. All yes – Approved
Additions or Deletions to Agenda – Adding Kathy Antaya with New Business
Reports -
- Public Works – Todd Gerber spoke about Battle Creek being a “Tree City USA”. Mr.
Gerber noted Battle Creek has been a “Tree City” for approximately 20 years. Members
asked questions.
- Environmental Programs update – Liz Paul updated the committee about the MS4 permit
regarding Storm water. Ms. Paul noted the application was submitted in 2015. Ms. Paul
also reminded the committee about some upcoming events.
- Planning updates – Eric Feldt updated the committee on the Non-Motorized
Transportation plan.
- City Commission updates – Comm. Baldwin noted that Battle Creek was designated as an
“All-American City”. Comm. Baldwin also noted that the budget was passed as well.
Sustainability Plan -
- Susan Anderson addresses the Sustainability Plan. Members discussed winter issues and
spending. Susan Anderson made a motion to create sub-committees for the sub-headings
of the Sustainability Plan, seconded by Kathy Antaya. Mr. Helmboldt noted there is no
quorum. Mr. Helmboldt stated it will be brought up at the July meeting. Motion tabled.
Field Trips, Trainings, Etc.
- None
Old Business -
- Walk for Tiffany after meeting? Members walked after the meeting.
New Business -
- Kathy Antaya – spoke about adding more employees to the membership. Ms. Antaya also
noted Commissioners that are on the Committee and do not attend. Members discussed
the membership numbers and what it takes to make a quorum. The Committee
requirements were noted. Mr. Helmboldt mentioned adding Eric Feldt however, Comm.
Susan Baldwin pointed out the rules state only 2 staff members. Members discussed
reaching out for members and looking for tree committee members.
- Kristen Blood left the meeting at 2:02pm.
Public Comment – None
Member Comments/Announcements –
Liz Paul mentioned she submitted the Michigan Green checklist and we may get “gold” status.
Members discussed.
Members discussed the new awards the City has received. They discussed how to display them
or how to let the public know.
Mike Myszka noted a city in India ran out of water.
