The purpose of this Committee is to increase the City's efforts to incorporate environmentally responsible, cost effective policy in
the planning, administration and economic development of its built infrastructure and natural resources. The Committee may make
recommendations to the City Commission for their consideration and will be available as a resource on sustainability policy.
The committee is grateful for the land upon which we live and recognizes the Potawatomi Nation as the original inhabitants. The
committee seeks to partner when possible with the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi (NHBP) Tribe in stewardship of the
land and its natural resources.
Minutes
Call to Order – 1:09 pm
Attendance – Kurt Tribett, Sue Anderson, Comm. Susan Baldwin, Kathy Antaya, Andy
Helmboldt, Sarah Kelly, Kristin Blood via phone, Comm. Kate Flores via phone
Non-Members – Eric Feldt, Jacob Schacht, and guest Bob Gilbert, possible member
Approval of Minutes – July 2019 – Susan Baldwin made a motion to approve the minutes from
the July meeting, seconded by Sue Anderson. Approved. All Yes.
Reports
- City energy efficiency activities – Kurt Tribett passed around some photographs. Mr.
Tribett discussed some energy savings methods the City is using regarding filling water tanks.
Mr. Tribett spoke about the Waste Water Plant.
- Environmental Programs update – Liz Paul is not in attendance, but she sent an email to
all members. Sarah Kelly noted the Styrofoam/Electronics collection event was successful and
they filled the trailer.
- Planning updates – none
- City Commission updates – Comm. Baldwin noted an economic town hall event coming up
at Grace Health on August 30th. Sue Anderson noted there is a tour available of the Milton
Tower on September 4th at 5:30pm.
Sustainability Plan:
- monitoring document - Sue Anderson wants to get this moving along and suggested
looking at splitting up the plan. The Committee discussed splitting up the Chapters.
- subcommittees – The Committee sectioned off the plan by Chapter. Kurt Tribett stated
his staff has assigned staff to different areas. Liz Paul is working on an Excel spreadsheet with
staff members assigned to certain tasks. The Committee members took on specific interests:
Comm.Baldwin – Government
Kurt Tribett – Water
Kathy Antaya – Land Use/Public Outreach
Sarah Kelly – Waste
Andy Helmboldt - Transportation
Eric Feldt – Land Use/Transportation

Field Trips - City Clerk, Victoria Houser, noted a tour is available of a pump house and wind farm
in Ludington, Michigan. Sue Anderson mentioned a seminar called “Rise up and Draw Down”
happening in Grand Rapids on September 25, 2019. Kristin Blood made a motion to nominate
Sue Anderson and Kathy Antaya to go to the seminar as representatives for the Sustainability
Committee, seconded by Kathy Antaya. All Yes. Motion approved.
Trainings, Etc. - none
Other Business
- native land statement – Andy Helmboldt has included a statement at the top of the
agenda. No objections.
- meeting time – The Committee discussed moving the meeting to the first Monday of each
month and change the time as well. Andy Helmboldt made a motion to revise the
existing calendar to move the meeting to the First Monday of the month at a time of
3:30pm, seconded by Sue Anderson. All Yes. Motion approved. Comm. Susan Baldwin
made a motion to cancel the September meeting, seconded by Kathy Antaya. All Yes.
Meeting cancelled.
Public Comment – Bob Gilbert introduced himself to the Committee.
Member Comments/Announcements – Sue Anderson spoke on a few topics. The Committee
discussed rules for waste during Special Events. Andy Helmboldt mentioned the Tree Advisory
Board meeting.
Next Meeting
- September 23, 2019, 1:00-2:30pm at City Hall has been cancelled. Next meeting will be
October 7, 2019 at 3:30 pm in Room 302a
