Sustainable BC Committee

City of Battle Creek Sustainable BC Committee City Hall 10 N. Division St. Room 302A Monday, January 6, 2020, 3:30pm The purpose of this Committee is to increase the City's efforts to incorporate environmentally responsible, cost effective policy in the planning, administration and economic development of its built infrastructure and natural resources. The Committee may make recommendations to the City Commission for their consideration and will be available as a resource on sustainability policy. The committee is grateful for the land upon which we live, and recognizes the Potawatomi Nation as the original inhabitants. The committee seeks to partner when possible with the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi (NHBP) Tribe in stewardship of the land and its natural resources. AGENDA Call to Order – 3:31pm Introductions – Members Present - Mayor Behnke, Sue Anderson, Kathy Antaya, Kurt Tribett, Sarah Kelly, Mike Myszka, City Manager Rebecca Fleury and Susan Baldwin via phone. Andy Helmboldt arrived at 3:50pm. Mayor Behnke left at 4:07pm. Non-Members Present – Eric Feldt, Jacob Schacht, Bessie Stears, Bob Gilbert. Eric Feldt left at 4:20pm. Approval of Minutes – November 2019 – Mayor Behnke made a motion to approve the minutes from the November 4, 2019, seconded by Sue Anderson. All Yes. Approved. Reports – - City energy efficiency activities – Kurt Tribett reported on various activities. He noted the City received the Green Award. - Environmental Programs update – Kurt Tribett introduced Bessie Stears as the new Environmental Coordinator for the City of Battle Creek. - Planning updates – Eric Feldt gave an update. Eric Feldt noted a new portion of the Linear Path was built and he sees it being used. Eric Feldt also noted that the Marihuana businesses have some environmental choices as part of the pick list. - City Commission updates – City Manager Rebecca Fleury gave an update from the City Commission. Mayor Behnke spoke of the trip to Japan. Sustainability Plan: - Katie Norton, Facility Manager for the City of Battle Creek, spoke about the Sustainability Plan and her role/goals and her part in rolling out the plan. Katie Norton mentioned looking into software to track energy at all the facilities. The members discussed narrowing the plan down to just the main buildings. The members discussed how to decide where the  changes could make the biggest difference. Katie Norton discussed the recycling and energy savings she has done so far at City Hall. Katie discussed better education of City staff regarding recycling. Ms. Norton also noted how the facility managers are now talking to each other about building issues and using each other’s knowledge. Ms. Norton noted there is now a Facility Manager group to help solve issues. Field Trips, Trainings, Etc. - none Other Business Schedule for 2020 - The Board discussed the 2020 schedule. The meeting schedule discussion was tabled to the next meeting. Public Comment - none Member Comments/Announcements – Kurt Tribett mentioned the Stryofoam collection this Saturday.
