Sustainable BC Committee

The purpose of this Committee is to increase the City's efforts to incorporate environmentally responsible,
cost effective policy in the planning, administration and economic development of its built infrastructure
and natural resources. The Committee may make recommendations to the City Commission for their
consideration and will be available as a resource on sustainability policy.
The committee is grateful for the land upon which we live, and recognizes the Potawatomi Nation as the
original inhabitants. The committee seeks to partner when possible with the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of
the Potawatomi (NHBP) Tribe in stewardship of the land and its natural resources.
MINUTES
Call to Order – 3:32pm
Attendance – Commissioner Susan Baldwin, Bob Gilbert, Sarah Kelly, Kathy Antaya, Kurt
Tribbett, Kristen Blood, Mayor Mark Behnke (left at 4:06 pm), Mike Myszka (arrived at 3:38pm),
Andy Helmboldt (arrived at 3:50pm)
Non-Members – Bessie Stears, Patty Hoch-Melluish, Sue Anderson, Jacob Schacht
Approval of Minutes – January 2020 - Kristen Blood made a motion to approve the minutes
from the January 6, 2020 meeting, seconded by Mayor Behnke. All Yes. Approved.
Reports:
- City energy efficiency activities – Kurt Tribbett discussed different items happening with
the City of Battle Creek Department of Public Works.
- Environmental Programs update – Bessie Stears updated the Board on the upcoming
events including the Children’s Water Festival on May 8, 2020. Jacob Schacht talked about the
trip to the Ludington Consumer’s Facility and gave a short presentation. Sarah Kelly informed
the Board about an upcoming solar farm into the county and Recyclerama.

Sustainability Plan:
- Annual report to commission – Kathy Antaya made a motion to have the Chairperson
create a one page report to the City Commission, seconded by Mike Myszka. All Yes. Approved.
Field Trips, Trainings, Etc. - none
Other Business
- Schedule for 2020 – Members discussed the 2020 upcoming schedule. The Board
discussed the meetings being on the first Monday of every month at 3:30 except May, August,
September, and November of 2020. Location to be at City Hall Room 302A. Kristen Blood made
a motion to approve the schedule as discussed, seconded by Kathy Antaya. All Yes. Approved.
- Committee goals and activities for 2020 – Members discussed how to structure the
meetings to cover the Sustainability Plan goals.
Public Comment – Susan Anderson discussed
climate change and energy.
