Arts Commission Minutes City of Bellingham, Washington Tuesday 6:00 PM April 2, 2024 Mayor's Boardroom & Zoom https://meetings.cob.org -Commission members Present: Paul George, Eric Shew, Phillip Freytag, Patricia McDonnell and Jody Bento Commission Members Absent: Amy Chaloupka, Kate Clark Staff Members Present/ Presenters: Shannon Taysi, PCDD, Russ Islay, PW, Bethany Hoglund, Library, Annette Bagley, Library Agenda Items Public Meeting 1. Sunnyland Street Mural Project Megan Starr, a representative of the Sunnyland Neighborhood presented two different designs they will be proposing to the neighborhood for a street mural to be located at Dean Avenue and Texas street. Staff reminded the Commission if they didn’t approve of either design, the neighborhood would need to come back with alternative designs. The Commission felt both designs were appropriate and “joyful”. Paul George moved and Patricia McDonnell seconded the recommendation to approve either of the designs selected by the neighborhood. All in favor, motion carries. 2. Misc. - Percent for Art – Bellingham Public Library Bethany Hoglund from the library said the scope for artwork has changed since they last visited the Arts Commission. She said they no longer have funding to do any work in the Children’s library as proposed prior. She said her team discussed focusing percent funding for artwork to be utilized on the walls visible to the public on the interior. It was clarified that if they wanted 2D artwork, the Museum would likely have to be involved. She provided images of the available wall space. Staff recommended the Commission tour the library to see the space before any formal recommendations are made and reminded the Commission, this item isn’t formally on the agenda and will need to return. Shannon Taysi will arrange a tour. Other Business 1. Public Comment Period Alex McLean commented about the paint type Sunnyland should use for their mural. 2.
