WORKSHOP TO BEGIN AT 6:00 PM NOTICE OF WORKSHOP MEETING 1 Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Mayor Ryan at 6:00 p.m. 2 Roll Call ALSO PRESENT: City Manager Michelle Wolfe; Community Development Director Erik Thorvig; Public Works Director Jon Haukaas; Police Chief/Safety Services Manager Brian Podany; Finance Director Joe Huss; Public Services Manager/Assistant City Manager Bob Therres; City Planner Lori Johnson; Associate Planner Shawn Kaye; Planning/Economic Development Technician Elizabeth Showalter; Planning/Administrative Assistant Pat Robinson; City Engineer Dan Schluender; Communications Manager Ben Hayle; City Clerk Catherine Sorensen; Human Resources Director Cassandra Tabor; Planning Commissioners Jason Halpern and Maisa Olson. The Council welcomed Human Resources Director Cassandra Tabor to the City. Present: 6 - Councilmember Garvais, Councilmember Jeppson, Mayor Ryan, Councilmember Swanson, Councilmember Robertson, and Councilmember Paul Absent: 1 - Councilmember Hovland 3 New Business 3-1 URBAN LAND INSTITUTE (ULI) WORKSHOP Attachments: NCF Report Advisory-Services-Map Community Development Director Erik Thorvig stated the City is a member of ULI Minnesota, whose mission is to engage public and private sector leaders to foster collaboration, share knowledge and influence meaningful strategic action in the responsible use of land to create and sustain thriving communities. He stated ULI City of Blaine Page 1 City Council Workshop Minutes January 13, 2020 was present to offer an interactive workshop with policy leaders to focus on the current challenges of development and redevelopment in the City. He said the goal would be to foster dialogue among the public and private sectors to strengthen a mutual understanding of today’s economic reality, market preferences and demographic shifts and better understand the importance of effective partnerships. The panel included Kevin Locke, Cathy Bennett, and Rachel Keenan from ULI, Maple Grove City Administrator Heidi Nelson, Cushman & Wakefield Director Jeremy Striffler, Ehlers Senior Municipal Advisor and Vice President Jason Aarsvold, and Assistant Commissioner for Multifamily Minnesota Housing James Lehnhoff. The panel shared growth and demographic data and discussion was held on strategies to position the City to be competitive and resilient and to attract the best quality development. 4 Council Calendar Review OTHER BUSINESS None.
