Meeting called to order at 6:39 pm
1. Group picture taken
2. Introductions of new commissioners: Kynette Campbell, Antoine Jennings and Lori Moon
3. Commission reviewed ordinance NO. 4482 Section 120.520: Human Relations Commission Purpose;
Composition; Term of Members: 7 commissioners
4. 3 citizen members, 4 community sector members (business community, educational, faith, law
enforcement), 2 student members
5. All commissioners will be appointed by the Mayor, with the consent and approval of a majority of the
City Council.
6. Recommendations for student reps- Josie White has some recs from Blue Springs South High School
and she will pass those names along. Student applicants from Blue Springs High School will also be
sought. Student reps are non-voting members.
7. Discussion- what is a quorum? Right now we have 6 commissioners, so a quorum would be 4 members
present.
8. Positions change annually. Chairman and Vice Chairman serve one year terms, and no person shall
serve more than two consecutive terms in the same office.
9. Recording secretary may serve a third term or more if by unanimous vote.
10. Within the next year the HRC will be required to generate a report outlining its activities. This report
may be presented to the City Council, if needed.
11. Citizen's forum for the Public Safety Board- second Tuesday in November
12. Assessors will be in Blue Springs to evaluate our police department. There will be a public hearing on
August 17th at 5:30 pm. The HRC members are encouraged to attend this hearing.
13. October 6th_ National Night Out Against Crime sponsored by the Blue Springs Police Department
14. Chief McCoy encouraged the commissioners to read Ordinance NO. 4482 and begin formulating goals
of what the HRC should work to accomplish in the coming year.
15. Gino Bueno is organizing a community fair- October 4th_ Sunday from 2-5 pm
16. Set up starts at 12:30 pm
17. HRC logo was voted on at the last meeting.
18. Community event plans: change the name of the upcoming event on October 4th-need to find a new
name for the event by the next meeting in August.
19. Thoughts: Discovering Blue Springs- discussion followed
20. What is it? Come and discover what Blue Springs has to offer you . Education, faith, business, law
enforcement, social services, health and safety
21. Gino moved to adopt the theme for the October 4th event:
"Discovering Blue Springs"
Vote was unanimous
22. Gino would like an official letter with the commission's logo to take with him for introductions when
soliciting participants for the event
23. Lori Moon volunteered to schedule the W.E.E. bus to come to the Discovering Blue Springs event on
October 4th.
24. Chief McCoy encouraged the commission to be thinking about ideas of what we can do as a
commission to impact the community
25. Fall Fun Fest September 18-20- contact the Chamber of Commerce regarding either walking or a float
in the parade- Kynette Campbell will contact Lora Vermillion regarding the HRC's participation in this
community event
