Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting August 2, 2016 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Fieldhouse. Staff: Carol Reed Brandon Jackley – Present City Council Liaison: Dale Carter - Absent Jennifer Splittorff – Present A motion was made and seconded to accept the Consent Agenda; it passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: Justin Stuart distributed a questionnaire to the members with answers to be included in the fall activity guide. Program/Activity Spotlight: Randy Cooper reviewed a new program, Outdoor Eats. He discussed how the program came about and said it was advertised in the activity guide, on Facebook, and with flyers. 15 people enrolled with a fee of $12 each for the program, which was held at Young Park shelter. Randy explained the difference between indoor and outdoor Dutch ovens and said the outdoor ovens are designed to be used with charcoal for cooking. Each person received a cookbook, instructions on how to season their Dutch oven, and a sample of food prepared at the class. Finances: Dennis Dovel presented the financial report through the month of July. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Justin Stuart said the fall activity guide will be in the mail to residents by the end of August. Summer day camp is finishing up next week, and the Mud Volleyball Tournament and the Night Bike Ride are both being held in August. The curtains dividing the basketball courts are up and in use. Pam Buck reviewed activities and programs held at Vesper Hall last month. She also reported that commemorative bricks will be sold as a fund raiser for the dog park. Randy Cooper reported that the tennis courts at Young Park have been renovated, and the gazebo at Rotary Park was painted by volunteers from the Rotary Club. Staff power washed the structure in preparation for the painting. Steve Willman reported that the art piece located in front of City Hall will be sandblasted, re-painted and moved to a location just east of the Public Safety Building. 1 Steve also reported on the trash dumped at Ward Park by the nearby storage facility. He said the City will hire a contractor to clean up the area and will bill Storage Mart for the cost. Dennis Dovel reported that the final presentation of the Parks Master Plan will be on August 29 at 6 p.m. in the Journagan Room at the Public Safety Building. He encouraged all members to attend. A reminder will be sent before the meeting. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: Brandon expressed the thanks of the Commission to Jen for her service.
