Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting October 4, 2016 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at the Fieldhouse. The Vice-Chairman called the meeting to order. Richard Mitchem – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Dennis Dovel George Deibert – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Carol Reed Jack Gilliland – Present City Council Liaison: Dale Carter - Absent Maureen Johnson – Present Brandon Jackley – Absent Michelle Brown – Present A motion was made and seconded to accept the Consent Agenda; it passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: Dennis introduced new Commission member, Michelle Brown. Program/Activity Spotlight: Dennis said the Fieldhouse 1st Anniversary Open House was well attended and will become an annual event. 35 vendors, including St. Mary’s Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital, participated in the wellness fair providing health screenings and giving away promotional items. KC Wolf and other sports mascots attended. Food was provided by Hy-Vee, Chick-fil-A, Sinclair’s, Texas Roadhouse and TARA. Finances: Dennis Dovel said year-end figures will not be available until mid-November Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Randy Cooper said staff has worked around the Fieldhouse in preparation for the anniversary celebration. They were also busy with the Fall Fun Festival and the Samoan Festival. A new fire pit was constructed at Adams Dairy Golf Club. It will be used for the Spooky Springs event and will also serve as a seating area at the club. At Grounds Park staff cut dead trees and left them in place for wildlife habitat. The “OH” piece of art was moved from City Hall to the Municipal Parking Lot across from the Public Safety Building. Pam Buck reviewed activities and special events held at Vesper Hall in September. She said Vesper Hall volunteers staffed a booth at Fall Fun Fest, selling handmade items. She also said winners from the 50+ Art Show are on display in the lobby at Vesper Hall. 1 Special events in October include Car Cruise, Oktoberfest, and Vesper Hall Halloween parties. Justin Stuart said outdoor programs are wrapping up as fall programs begin. A new program, Engineering with Lego’s is very popular. The Yes Youth Fitness program has not been working out and the agreement with them will be terminated. Steve Willman reported that the Public Art Commission temporary display will end October 1st. If not purchased the pieces will be removed by the artists. Steve discussed improvements to the lobby area at Vesper Hall. New furniture has been purchased, as well as accent lights and a new clock. Additional side chairs will also be purchased. Dennis Dovel said staff is in the process of reviewing applications for the Fitness Supervisor position and the Front Desk supervisor position is currently open. The Club 7 gym closed Monday morning and we have provided an opportunity to their members to use the Fieldhouse at no charge until October 10th. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: None Old Business: The Parks Master Plan was discussed and the Commission recommended adoption of the plan by Council. Dena McLean moved to recommend adoption, and Michelle Brown seconded the motion. It was approved unanimously.
