Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting December 12, 2017 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at the Blue Springs Fieldhouse. The Chairman, Keith Hannaman, called the meeting to order. Richard Mitchem-Absent Parks Dept. Staff: Dennis Dovel George Deibert-Present Parks Dept. Staff: Randy Cooper Maureen Johnson-Present Parks Dept. Staff: Amanda Johnson Brandon Jackley-Present City Council Liaison: Kent Edmondson-Present Michelle Brown-present A motion was made by Dena Duhon and seconded by Michelle Brown to accept the Consent Agenda; it passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: None Programs/Activity Spotlight: Mary Herrington was introduced by Dennis Dovel, and spoke about the youth basketball leagues for kindergarten through second graders that will start in the coming months. The program is in partnership with Blue Springs School District and will be held at Sunny Point Elementary. The Parks and Recreation department and Blue Springs School District will split the revenue from the program. Currently 187 kids are enrolled. Finances: Financial report was reviewed. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Randy Cooper reviewed his report, and included that the maintenance department is working on cross training employees in different areas to better utilize staff. The parts from the old scoreboard were recycled. Maureen inquired about the trees in the woods at Chapel Pond. Randy explained the removal process of the trees would require renting equipment costing between $3,000-$4,000. Mary reviewed her report, and spoke about the many rentals that are occurring at the fieldhouse daily. She also talked about the annual Brunch with Santa event that took place last weekend. The event was sold out and received great feedback from those in attendance. Pam reviewed her report, and included more information about the Let’s Move Gently program for adults that will start in January. This program provides opportunities for adults to participate in non-traditional sports. Pam will be retiring at the end of January and those in attendance expressed congratulations. Justin reviewed his report, and added that the Community Garden mailer went out this week and we will start registration for plots in the coming months. The activity guide is being condensed but the condensed version will refer individuals to the website for more program information and will also have tear out pages with program and registration information. Dennis added information on the cost benefits of a condensed program guide. The department will go from spending $40,000-$50,000 on printing and mailing cost down to $10,000. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: None Old Business: Justin presented a PowerPoint regarding Fieldhouse Security. Park Sales Tax Update- Dennis presented a slideshow about the work going on at Adams Pointe Golf course. The Back 9 bunkers are expected to be completed by the end of next week. The entire project is expected to be completed by early spring. The Ward Park playground options were presented in a video. After the final vote takes place, the project is expected to be completed between June and July 2018. The playground for Rotary Park is expected to be completed in late April 2018. New Business: None Miscellaneous: Dennis inquired about starting up the Monthly/Quarterly committee meetings and asked the Commission about preferences. Keith asked everyone to send an email about which committee (Programs, Budget, Parks Maintenance) individuals would like to participate in. Dennis expressed gratitude to the Parks Commission Committee members, he then presented Blue Springs Parks & Recreation pullovers to each member. There will not be Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting in January 2018, we will resume in February 2018. As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by Dena Duhon and seconded by Michelle Brown.
