Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting March 6, 2018 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at the Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order. Richard Mitchem – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Dennis Dovel George Deibert – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Justin Stuart Kathy Richardson – Absent Parks Dept. Staff: Mary Herrington Keith Hannaman – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Randy Cooper Dena Duhon - Present Parks Dept. Staff: Amanda Johnson Maureen Johnson – Present City Council Liaison: Kent Edmondson - Present Brandon Jackley – Present Michelle Brown – Present A motion was made by Keith Hannaman and seconded by George Deibert to accept the Consent Agenda; it passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: Theresa Brightwell, a resident of District 2, attended as a guest of Keith Hannaman. Program/Activity Spotlight: Marty presented information about the Vesper Hall Health Fair, which took place on March 2nd, 2018 from 8-10:30am. The event provided the senior population with the opportunity to visit with 23 different vendors from around the area. The event had around 80 participants and provided those in attendance with a complimentary breakfast. This was a great opportunity for the senior population to get information and socialize with each other and businesses in the community Finances: Dennis reviewed the Financial Report. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Mary spoke about the Member Appreciation event held at the Fieldhouse in February. This event provided members with food and the opportunity to complete a survey to enter into a raffle. Local business provided donation items. Justin reviewed his report and mentioned the Budget Sub Committee met on March 6th, 2018 and approved the Fees and Charges for 2018-2019 to be brought before the Parks Commission for approval next month. Dennis reviewed his report and added that a few Parks and Recreation staff members attended the MPRA conference last week including himself, Justin Stuart, Mary Herrington, and Randy Cooper. Roscoe Righter was inducted into the Missouri Parks & Recreation Hall of Fame during the conference. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None 1 City Council Liaison Report: Kent explained the Use Tax that will be voted upon by residence. This would allow the city to collect from state internet taxes, which could potentially lead to $400,000 in projected revenue and around $80,000 of that to Parks and Recreation and $80,000 to Public Safety. Old Business: Park Sales Tax Update – The Rotary Park Playground renovation is underway and is expected to be completed in April. The Ward Park Playground renovation Project will begin after the Rotary Park Playground project is complete and is expected to be complete in late June or early July. The Tennis Court project at Blue Springs Park and Pink Hill Park was approved by City Council on February 5th, 2018. McConnell & Associates have been awarded the contract for the renovation. Work will begin in late spring or early summer. Vesper Hall Kitchen Equipment purchase- A motion was made to approve the purchase of new kitchen equipment for Vesper Hall using funds in the Truman Heartland Community Foundation account by Richard and seconded by Michelle; it passed unanimously.
