Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting June 5, 2018 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, June 5th, 2018 at the Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order. Richard Mitchem – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Dennis Dovel George Deibert – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Justin Stuart Kathy Richardson – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Mary Herrington Keith Hannaman – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Randy Cooper Dena Duhon - Present Parks Dept. Staff: Amanda Johnson Maureen Johnson – Present Parks Dept. Staff: James Farris Brandon Jackley – Absent City Council Liaison: Ron Fowler - Present Michelle Brown – Absent Megan Johnson - Present A motion was made by Dena Duhon and seconded by Richard Mitchem to accept the Consent Agenda; it passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: Dennis introduced Megan Johnson as a new member of the Park Commission. Program/Activity Spotlight: James Farris presented information on the youth baseball programs provided by the Parks and Recreation department. Currently there are three divisions including, Little All Stars T-Ball (3&4 year olds), T-Ball (5&6 year olds), and Machine Pitch (7&8 year olds). The Little All Stars T- Ball program has grown from 24 participants in 2012 to 288 participants in 2018. The T- Ball League started in 2016 with 72 participants and currently has 202. Machine Pitch Leagues were implemented this year to accommodate youth as they age out of the other programs. This league currently has 68 participants. The growing number of youth baseball leagues offered sparked the need for another field to be built at Blue Springs Park this past spring. Finances: Dennis reviewed the Financial report. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: None Old Business: Sales Tax Update: Ward Park Playground renovations are currently taking place. The project is expected to be complete in 3 weeks and a dedication ceremony will be held. Blue Springs Park and Pink Hill Park tennis courts are expected to be completed within the next month. The renovations will include a new court and shade structures for players to utilize. Woods Chapel Park Trail is currently under constructions and being repaved and widened. Currently the projects for 2018 under the Parks Sales Tax are under budget by $300,000. 1 New signage will be incorporated throughout the parks that will help with identification purposes and consistent branding. New Business: The next park commission meeting will include the election of officers for 2018-2019.
