Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting
June 4, 2019
A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at the
Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order.

Dena Duhon – Present City Council Liaison: Jerry Kaylor -- Present
Richard Mitchem – Absent
A motion was made by Megan Johnson and seconded by Keith Hannaman to accept the Consent
Agenda. It passed unanimously.
Visitors/Correspondence: Reid Hansen has replaced Brandon Jackley.
Program/Activity Spotlight: Paul Thompson presented on past Spring and upcoming Summer events.
The Easter Egg-stravaganza was a free event for kids ages 1-12. Booths from local businesses provided
candy, crafts, giveaways, and more for the estimated 400-500 people in attendance. The 29th Annual
Fishing Derby was also a free event for ages 5-14. This event was in partnership with Sunset Optimist
Club and Lake Lotawana Optimist Club. Free bait, food, and prizes were provided for the estimated 70
participants. Movies in the Park is an upcoming free event for families. The movie Ralph Breaks the
Internet will begin at dusk with popcorn and water for all attendees. Music in the Park – Concert Series
is an ongoing event held every Sunday for the summer. This event is sponsored by St. Mary’s Medical
Center with co-sponsors 1st MidAmerica Credit Union, Zuvers Real Estate, and Blue Springs Rotary
Club. Lastly, Paul spoke on the upcoming event Dog Days of Summer which will be held at the Blue
Springs Dog Park. This free event will have a costume contest and more.

Old Business: Dennis reviewed the status of Burrus Old Mill Park. Wednesday June 12th at 4pm will be
the grand opening celebration. Special guest Jill Moore will speak on the importance of an inclusive
play area and show how the play area at Old Mill Park provides that.
New Business: Dennis presented the Parks and Recreation Annual Report Packet.
Miscellaneous: The next meeting will be Tuesday July 2nd.
As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by Dena Duhon and seconded by
Keith Hannaman.
