Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting August 6, 2019 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at the Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order. George Deibert -- Present Parks Dept. Staff: Dennis Dovel Kathy Richardson – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Justin Stuart Reid Hansen – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Matt Asikainen Keith Hannaman -- Present Parks Dept. Staff: James Farris Maureen Johnson – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Jayla Coleman Megan Johnson – Absent City Council Liaison: Jerry Kaylor -- Present Dena Duhon – Present Richard Mitchem – Present Rachel Uptergrove – Present A motion was made by Dena Duhon and seconded by George Deibert to accept the Consent Agenda. It passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: Rachel Uptergrove has been added to the park commission. Program/Activity Spotlight: James Farris presented on several sports programs currently and upcoming. The first program was Youth Baseball for ages 3-8 for the summer. Facilities used were Wilbur Young Park, Blue Springs Park, Keystone Park, and Baumgardner Park. 727 total players registered through Parks and Recreation this summer. Raising Canes sponsors the T-Ball and Machine Pitch leagues while Chick Fil’A sponsors Little All-Stars. The next program was the 16th Annual Mighty Mud Volleyball Tournament which was held at Hidden Valley Park. 24 teams competed with each team guaranteed four pool play games. Minsky’s was on site to provide pizza to purchase and Texas Roadhouse provided water and handouts. The last program presented was the 2nd Annual Fieldhouse Frenzy Pickleball Tournament which is coming up. Last year there was 112 participants, while this year there are 110 registered, which is near the max we can take with court space. $35 entry fee gives each player access to same gender and mixed doubles. Each player receives an event shirt and Fieldhouse towel with their welcome packet. Finances: Financials were reviewed by Dennis. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: None Old Business: Dennis gave an update on the Sales Tax. He stated that we are still working on plans for different projects and do not have anything to present until the Sub-Committee meets in October or November. New Business: None Miscellaneous: None As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by George Deibert and seconded by Kathy Richardson. 1
