Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting January 7, 2020 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at the Fieldhouse. Staff: Jayla Coleman Dena Duhon – Present City Council Liaison: Jerry Kaylor -- Present Richard Mitchem – Present Rachel Uptergrove – Present A motion was made by George Deibert and seconded by Keith Hannaman to accept the Consent Agenda. It passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: None Program/Activity Spotlight: Mary Herrington presented on Vesper Hall renovations that have been completed in 2019. These renovations were part of the Parks Sales Tax. Projects included interior painting, front counter updates, new flooring, and new kitchen equipment. All renovations have been completed expect the interior painting. The interior painting will be completed in mid-February. Mary then presented on Vesper Hall Meals program. Vesper Hall offers congregate and Home Delivered Meals to Blue Springs residents. We average 50 congregate meals daily. There are five routes of 84 patrons who receive a home delivered meal. Three of the routes are delivered by volunteers and two are contracted through Oats. Vesper Hall has 200 active volunteers for an approximately 11,500 volunteer hours. These volunteers help run our daily programs including cards, sewing and fitness classes. They also help in the kitchen and with special events. We are continually looking to expand our programs at Vesper. Some new programs this year at Vesper Hall include New Years at Noon, Silver and Strong, Computer Classes, and Evening Bingo. Finances: Financials were reviewed by Dennis. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: None Old Business: Wilbur Young Park ball fields have bases installed and some light poles installed. Outfield bases are to start installation soon and a 3rd field that is gained is to be lit. The tennis courts renovations at Wilbur Young Park have been approved by City Council. The playgrounds and shelters at Wilbur Young Park will be presented to City Council for approval January 20th. Parking lot updates at Wilbur Young Park are to come in 2021. City Council has approved the additional parking lot at Fieldhouse. Piping will be first, which will take some time and management will be letting members know. Parks Study will begin January 29th. Looking for about three park commissioners to be a part of the steering committee. Meetings will be day time and evenings. New Business: None Miscellaneous: Megan Johnson, Rachel Uptergrove, and Richard Mitchem agreed to commit to meeting with Parks and Recreation programmers for a meeting that will take place once a quarter. 1 As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by Dena Duhon and seconded by Reid Hansen. 2
