Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting February 4, 2020 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at the Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order. George Deibert -- Present Parks Dept. Staff: Dennis Dovel Kathy Richardson – Absent Parks Dept. Staff: Justin Stuart Keith Hannaman -- Present Parks Dept. Staff: Randy Cooper Maureen Johnson – Absent Parks Dept. Staff: Mary Herrington Megan Johnson – Present Parks Dept. Staff: James Farris Dena Duhon – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Matt Asikainen Richard Mitchem – Absent Parks Dept. Staff: Jayla Coleman Rachel Uptergrove – Present City Council Liaison: Jerry Kaylor -- Present A motion was made by Dena Duhon and seconded by Keith Hannaman to accept the Consent Agenda. It passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: None Program/Activity Spotlight: James Farris presented on E-Sports, also known as “Electronic Sports.” E-Sports is described as any form of competition using a video game platform. Some of the popular games for this are Fortnite, Madden NFL Football, Super Mario Smash Bros, League of Legends, and Call of Duty. There are also scholarships offered by over 50 schools in the United States being that this platform is growing so much. James talked about Mario Kart Madness Tournament that was held at Fieldhouse on January 20th on MLK Day. Ages 5th-12th grade were able to qualify and for $10 per player. This event had over 10 participants. Mario Kart is offered on Wii, Switch, Gamecube and the championship featured Rainbow Road on the Nintendo 64. Pizza and Drinks were provided. Upcoming events being offered are Madden Tournament on February 15th and Super Smash Bros Tournament on June 6th. James explained some of the reasons to offer these types of programs is because it targets a unique audience, we generally have a hard time reaching and a wide range of ages can participate. Finances: Financials were reviewed by Dennis. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: None Old Business: We are looking for three park commissioners to be a part of the steering committee for the parks and aquatics studies. This commitment is from February through July and some daytime meetings will take place. Dennis will be following-up with commissioners later this week regarding the committee. We are waiting for better weather so we can move forward with the Fieldhouse parking lot. New Business: None Miscellaneous: Opening to be on park commission for District 1 due to Reid Hansen resigning. As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by Dena Duhon and seconded Keith Hannaman. 1
