Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting May 4, 2022 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, May 4, 2022 at the Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order. Jon Burke -- Present Parks Dept. Staff: Dennis Dovel Keith Hannaman -- Present Parks Dept. Staff: Justin Stuart Gabriel Mejia – Absent Parks Dept. Staff: Derek Mayden Ken Horrell – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Mary Herrington Nick Brummel – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Jayla Coleman Tony Lopez – Present City Council Liaison: Susan Culpepper –Present A motion was made by Jon Burke and seconded by Ken Horrell to accept the Consent Agenda. It passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: None Program/Activity Spotlight: Mary presented on Get Outdoors event. This is the third year of having the event held Saturday April 23rd at Kemper Outdoor Education Center. It was a collaborative effort between parks and recreation providing staffing and location, Missouri Department of Conservation providing volunteers and equipment, and Jackson County parks and recreation providing staffing and equipment. Some of the activities held were fishing, kayaking, and archery. Some vendors that were at the event were CERT, Bass Pro, and Missouri Bird Observatory. There was a great turn out of around 300 people during the event. Staff continues to plan for new activities for the community and have great partnerships providing a team effort for this event. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: None Old Business: Dennis presented an update on Park Sales Tax. The Ward Park Pickleball Courts and James Walker Park Basketball court haven coated and are curing. The pickleball Courts should be opened the week of May 2nd, sometime early to mid-week. The Rotary Park Gazebo has is well under way. The old structure is gone, and the new steel frame has been installed. Pink Hill Park has 95% of the curbs installed. The paving will follow in the next week or so but will require the main entrance to be closed for approximately 3-days to mill the pavement, install the new base, and the finish course. Dennis then discussed an update on the Blue Springs Aquatic Center. The Aquatic Center has completed the Design Development stage and staff and the design team have been working on interior finishes as well as exterior finishes. Early release packages are being looked at and developed to be sent to vendors in the next few weeks. New Business: Justin presented that park commissioners would be reviewing and voting on the Fees and Charges Category and Range: Parks and Recreation 2022-2023. Goal is to have the review completed and approved by park commission as part of the 2022-2023 budget process. A motion to approve the changes made to Fees and Charges was made by Jon Burke and seconded by Ken Horrell. Miscellaneous: A new park commissioner has been appointed and it planned to take their oath by the next park commission meeting. As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by Nick Brummel and seconded by Jon Burke. 1
