Program/Activity Spotlight: Brian Spano presented on Department Marketing and the Gold Medal Award
submission. He reviewed the Quarterly Marketing Report. This report shows different parts of the parks and
recreation website updates from January-March of this year. Social media plays a big role in helping to promote
events and activities. Facebook and Twitter get great interactions from the public. Brian then presented on the
questions that Park Commission requested to see that were submitted for the Gold Medal Award.
Finances: Dennis presented on financials.
Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports.
Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None
City Council Liaison Report: Ron Fowler presented on topics from the city council meeting that was recently held.
He explained that Dennis was presented 10-year Service Award. Capital Improvements Program (C.I.P.) was
approved. There are four projects part of the C.I.P. that are planned. Including improvements on Wyatt Rd. The
CDBG is a Federal Grant that the city gets funded for. $400,000 will go towards improving restroom at Rotary Park.
Old Business: Dennis presented an update on the Aquatic Center. The lobby, locker rooms, and other rooms have all
steel structure set with roof decking beginning. For the outdoor aquatics the floors on all the outdoor pools connected
with the lazy river are complete. The parking lots curbs have been installed and finish grading and base rock is being
installed. The work on Fieldhouse recladding continues with metal panes being installed on the north wall.
Dennis then explained that prior to the July Park Commission meeting on July 11, the Park Commission will have
the opportunity to walk the job site to see the progress. This will occur at 5:30pm. Commissioners will need to have
closed toe shoes and will be required to wear a vest and hard hat while touring the site. Everyone will meet in the
Conference Room and then head out on sight at 5:30pm and then return to hold the Park Commission meeting.
New Business: None
Miscellaneous: Park commissioners presented park visit reports. Debbie Canfield went to the Blue Springs Dog
Park. The patrons that were there had concerns about the water fountain needing fixed, needing clear signage of
what the policies are in the park, the pond needs improvement, and there is not enough mulch. Patrons would like
more volunteer date opportunities to help mulch and more seating. Some positive feedback is that the dog park is big
1
and spacious, traveling patrons stop by frequently, and it is a friendly place to socialize. There were no volunteers to
report for July.
As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by Nick Brummel and seconded by Tony
Lopez.
