Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting February 6, 2024 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at the Fieldhouse. Staff: Jayla Coleman Almitra Buzan – Present City Council Liaison: Ron Fowler –Present Debbie Canfield – Present Tara Johnson – Present A motion was made by Ken Horrell and seconded by Tony Lopez to accept the Consent Agenda. It passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: None Program/Activity Spotlight: Eric Nehlsen presented on Group Exercise and Personal Training Classes. There has been a 6.5% increase in Group Exercise class attendance. Most popular classes have been Silver Sneakers Classic, Bootcamp, and Total Body. Personal Training dramatically went up after December promotion. Member engagement is also improving with having Fieldhouse Fitness Club offered on an application called Strava. There was a Holiday Break Step Challenge and Group Spin Ride both allowing participation through the app. The Fitness Challenge Trim to Triumph has begun with 27 participants currently. This 12-week program comes with an Introductory Seminar, goal specific workout example programs, nutrition seminar from a registered dietitian, and much more. There is a $125 cash prize. Finances: None Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None. City Council Liaison Report: None. Old Business: Dennis presented an update on the Park Sales Tax. Park Sales Tax is budgeted annually at $5,000,000. Tax receipts are exceeding the budgeted amount. In FY2022-23 tax receipts were just under $5.4 million and receipts for FY2023-24 are trending to be about the same. Dennis then presented an update on Blue Surf Bay Aquatics Center. The observation deck re-pouring is complete. Lockers have been installed. Bathroom fixtures are installed. Indoor Natatorium splash pad has been poured. The Dedication will be May 23rd. New Business: None Miscellaneous: Dennis Dovel let commissioners know that he is the Interim City Assistant Administrator. Justin Stuart is Parks and Recreation Director starting immediately. Park commissioners congratulated Dennis and Justin on their new roles. The March park commission meeting has been moved to March 12th due to MPRA Conference. As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by Jon Burk and seconded by Tony Lopez. 1
