Minutes of the Meeting
Thursday, June 8, 2017
Fieldhouse Conference Room
3:30 to 5:00 PM
Attending: Ramon Magee, Libby Comfort, Barbara Landes, Kathe White, Greta Hoener, Eleanor
Frasier, Steve Willman. Guest: Janet Kuemmerlein
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 3:30PM. We welcomed Olivia “Libby” Comfort as a
newly appointed member to the Public Art Commission.
Minutes: The minutes of the May meeting were approved as emailed.
Information/Update:
“BlueSprings.Net”.
1.Ramon gave a detailed report and showed images of the restoration project. The paint colors
we chose appear to be most satisfactory, the “net” looks much better with the stainless steel net
especially clean and the buildings are more evident. The brass inserts in the sidewalk were the
most demanding, mostly because the quality of the brass seems to be less than desirable for the
purpose and the brass insets were placed below the concrete, causing a place for water pooling
and other elements, e.g. salt, to cause deterioration of the surface. Under the circumstances (and
much work on the part of Metalabs) the brass is now readable. Ramon stated that Metalabs had
been very supportive and professional in all aspects of the restoration. At some point soon, we
should meet with Meg and discuss restoration process and commend them on their work.
2. We reviewed the final report provided by Meg Zahner from Metalabs which detailed their
work and concerns.
2. Discussion was that we would like to have something in the corridor of Adams Point
Conference Center that details the history and significance of the sculpture. We would like to
have Kim suggest possible options.
CAFÉ contract. Steve reported that the contract is in process, and awaiting an invoice so he can pay the
fee of $525 for a one-year contract. Once the invoice is available, he can arrange for administrative
approval and check and initiate the process.
“Breath” plaque. Eleanor reported that all the trees along the Blue Springs South library have been
removed, leaving only our artwork showing. The proposed plaque is 8” x 12” and can be ordered as soon
as Kim changes the wording to Walmart (instead of Wal-Mart) we can arrange with MVP for plaque.
Eleanor proposed that we place the plaque on the top of the artwork base so as to prevent damage and to
make it more visible. She has not yet ordered the plaque.
Other Plaques. Eleanor suggested that since we had to use reserve resources to pay for the restoration of
“BlueSprings.Net” as well as pay for other normal expenses for PAC, we would not order any more
plaques during this fiscal year. Future plaques to be ordered are: “Quasarc”, “Sundance” , “From East of
Here/Tumbleweeds”.
Veterans Way Memorial. Eleanor reported that we have received nearly $1000 in donations toward the
Memorial given in remembrance of Dale Leap. Rick Howell, VWM landscape architect, will be
recommending the size and type of bench to be placed along a walkway which bears his name.
Grant Status. Eleanor reported that we have received the $400 grant from Hallmark, that the $500 grant
from State Farm is in progress, and that she has received approval that the $1000 proposal from MACAA
has been approved. We hope to have these funds sometime this summer.
“The Ultimate Truth”
Fundraising. Eleanor said that we should start fundraising for the $5000 needed to pay for this artwork.
At this point we plan to retain it at the current site between the Adams Pointe Conference Center and
Marriott. She pointed out that we have three pieces of public art.in this vicinity. To date, we have
received $1000 from Blue Springs Art League toward this amount, leaving $4000 to raise from our
donors.
Donor Mailing. Eleanor thought that August would be a good time to start the donor mailings. Eleanor
has asked Kim for a flyer that we can send through the mail as well as distribute through other means to
solicit funds, such as at Corks and Canvas or at other events.
Corks and Canvas
The schedule for participating in Corks and Canvas on Saturday, June 24 from 11:00am to 7:00pmwas
discussed. We will have a tent, table and chairs provided by Parks, Volunteers were solicited to man the
tables as follows:
10:30 to 12:30—set up display—Greta and Ramon (if available)
12:30 to 2:30—Libby (if available)
2:30 to 4:30—Barbara and Kathe
4:30 to 6:30—Eleanor and Greta
Note: due to uncertainty of volunteer availability, it was deemed necessary to cancel plans for
participation in this event. We hope to do so next year.
“Capricious”
1. Sites for art placement. Ramon and Larry chose six possible sites for art placement, with the
recognition that the eventual sites would be dependents on the nature and size of the art. We are to place
site information on the City;/public art website so that artists may view the information about the Call for
Artist and see where artworks are to be placed. Ramon will work with Kim in arranging for this
information.
2. Selection Panelists. To jury the artist applications, we will invite five jurors to visit the CAFÉ website,
view the applications, and score the artists. Results of this process will give us the top candidates for final
review by the Selection Panel. Discussion was that the jurors we hope to invite are:
PAC: Larry Randall
Parks: Randy Cooper
Blue Springs Art League: to be determined
Outside: Jan Duffendack and Sean Kelly to be invited
3. Important Dates:
--August 14: applications close
--August 21-29: jurors review and vote
--Sept. 7: Selection Panel meets to determine finalists/alternate
--Sept 14: PAC Meeting to call and interview finalists
Other: We enjoyed a thank you and farewell reception for Steve Willman. Steve, we greatly appreciate
all you have done for and with PAC. We will miss you, your expertise that we relied on, your generosity
and good nature in helping us in our endeavors in public art programming, Veterans Way Memorial
programming and for providing all the information we asked of you. Good luck in your future endeavors!
Next Meeting: Thursday, July 13 at Fieldhouse Conference Room, 3:30 to 5:00PM
