1 Blue Springs Public Art Commission Minutes of the Meeting Wednesday, January 10, 2018 Fieldhouse Conference Room 3:30 to 5:00PM Attending: Ramon Magee, Barbara Landes, Kathe White, Greta Hoener, Jeff Carpenter, Eleanor Frasier, Justin Stuart, Jerry Kaylor Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 3:30PM Minutes: The minutes of the November Meeting were approved as emailed (No December Meeting) Information/Updates Grant Information. 1. Eleanor reported that Jennifer Frasier who had provided grants from State Farm Foundation previously has changed her job and we will no longer have the $500 annual donation that we had added to the budget. We expressed appreciation for past monies that helped fund expenses 2. Eleanor reported that she would be submitting the quote for printing “Public Art in Blue Springs” to MACAA for their grant of $750 toward this project Plaques 1. Eleanor reported that the plaque for ‘Breath” has been installed at BS South Library 2. Remaining plaques to be designed and purchased are: “Sundance”, “From East of Here/Tumbleweeds”, “Quasarc”. We would like to have “Sundance” re-installed and the plaques in place by the time Cecilia Lueza brings her artwork to the “Capricious” exhibit. “The Ultimate Truth” Donation Status. Eleanor provided information on the donors for this artwork and that $3850 has been donated to date. We need $5000 to meet our goal. “Moving the Stars”. Justin stated that the artwork has been placed at the small pocket park on Main Street. Landscape will occur in the spring as time permits. Thanks to Parks staff for taking care of this. “Capricious”. Ramon reported the site placement plans for the four artworks to be installed in March. Ramon, Larry, Randy and Eleanor selected the sites. “Public Art in Blue Springs”. Kim could not attend the meeting. (note: We learned that Kim was taking a new position as Assistant City Manager for North Kansas City so the status of this document is uncertain. Eleanor plans to meet with Kim to learn more) Maintenance of Public Documents. Kathe gave an update on what has been accomplished and what needs to be done. Progress is slow but steady in completing the work.  2 Other. 1.Eleanor reported that she has been asked to meet with the newly established Independence Commission on Visual Arts which is interested in how to establish a public art program. At one point, Blue Springs was the only City with a public art program but as it becomes evident that art is a means to identify a city to residents and businesses, cities are increasingly funding a public art program. 2. Eleanor provided information that Bloomington IL has changed the name of its Parks program to Bloomington Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department which gives further proof of art’s role in City identity and citizen services. Ideas to Fund Public Art Commission. As a followup to last meeting’s discussion, Eleanor appointed Ramon to chair a Public Art Funding Committee. Greta and Jeff volunteered to assist (note: Larry will also join this committee) Thinking Ahead. “BlueSprings.Net”. Discussion was that we would like an informational flyer that describes all three artworks located at Adams Pointe Conference Center and to have the flyers available for the public at the Conference Center and the Marriott desk. We also would like some kind of plaque or poster that describes “BlueSprings.Net” and the background information about the artist, the artist statement and the national recognition the sculpture received. A Dedication event would require funds which we do not have unless we have financial sponsorships to assist in the project. Restoration and Maintenance of Art. It seems that Metalabs will not be helping with plans for identifying maintenance needs. Eleanor will ask Larry to head a committee to identify these needs and then we can decide next steps. We might want to ask BSSD art teachers/students to participate in the project so that they gain experience. Dates: 1. 2018 Dedication of “Capricious”. Parks Department is our partner for this year’s exhibit. Kathe and Barbara will work with Justin in planning for the reception 2. 2019 Call to Artist. Possible partnership with Downtown Alive 3. 2020 Our 20th Anniversary. Possible partnership with BSSD Next Meeting: Wednesday, February 14, Fieldhouse Conference Room, 3:30 to 5:00PM
