1 Blue Springs Public Art Commission Minutes of the Meeting Fieldhouse Party Room 3 Wednesday, February 14, 2018 3:30 to 5:00 PM Attending: Lawrence Randall, Greta Hoener, Barbara Landes, Kathe White, Eleanor Frasier, Jerry Kaylor, Justin Stuart Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 3:30PM. Minutes: The minutes of the January meeting were approved as emailed, Congratulations. We recognized Ramon Magee for his acceptance into the 7th annual juried art show for Leawood Arts Council. Eleanor provided information and encouraged PAC members to attend if possible. Information/Updates/Discussion Sculpture Updates 1. “Breath” will need to be removed while the Blue Springs North Library is undergoing renovations. Parks staff will remove the artwork and store until it can be replaced. Eleanor noted that we would like the plaque to be held in place with a silver holder rather than a black one as the artwork is stainless steel and the black seems to interfere with the immediate view. 2. “Sundance” will soon return to Railroad Lake in Rotary Park. During the recent cold spell, Parks staff were able to place the posts that will hold “Sundance” figures in place. This will occur as Parks schedule permits. Eleanor would like to have the artwork in place by the time that Cecilia Lueza brings her “Celebration” sculpture in late March for the “Capricious” exhibit. 3. “Moving the Stars” has been moved to the pocket park at the corner of 12th and Main and landscaping will be placed in Spring as weather and schedules permit. Downtown Alive Entry. 1. Greta reported that she met with Downtown Alive Design Team. Discussion ranged from no interest in any changes to their design to allowing some input from the Public Art Commission. Greta asked if a representative could come to the March PAC meeting to discuss possible involvement of PAC in the design plans. (note: A representative will be at March meeting) 2. Discussion was whether PAC would enter into a Call for Artists for any artistic work on the entry. We would need to know by June meeting so that we could plan for our next temporary art exhibit if we are not working with Downtown Alive. Art Maintenance and Inventory 1. Kathe explained her project in detail and showed how she had organized the folders and what was included so that information is easily retrievable if needed, or is archived for future use. 2. Work is still in progress and much is to be done but we recognized the success that Kathe had achieved to date. Kathe identified some of the information she still needs for filing.  2 “Public Art in Blue Springs” Update 1. Since Kim Nakahodo has left her position as Communications Manager for the City, PAC will need to assume greater responsibility for updating and completing the publication. Kim gave Ramon all electronic information so that he can finalize the document and prepare for submission to the new Communications Manager who will arrange for publication. 2. Eleanor said she had received permission from MACAA to submit the temporary invoice for printing the publication so that we can receive the $750 grant. “Capricious” Temporary Art Exhibit 1. Scheduling Artists for installation. Stephen Fairfield has asked to install “The Chase” on Monday, March 26. The three other artists will be contacted by Justin as to the days and times for installation during the last week of March. 2. Arranging for Artist Information for the Brochure. Eleanor will contact the artists for artist statement, photo and signature. 3. Brochure. The brochure will be the responsibility of the new Communications Manager. PAC will provide assistance as needed. 4. Videography. Justin will arrange for David Watson to video installations and for still photos. 5. Dedication. We need to find a place for the Dedication near the art exhibit. We need to consider parking, possible weather conditions, and program as we decide. We need to arrange with Mayor for a preferred date as well. Invitations will need to be designed and sent. 6. Artists speakers. Discussion to see if high school art teachers would be interested in having a speaker and then seeing if any of the artists would be willing to take time to speak to students. Larry felt this might be difficult to arrange. No decision. Public Art Funding. After some discussion, the topic was deferred until the March meeting. Planning Ahead 1. 2018: “Capricious” Dedication in June—dates, place, partnership info by April meeting. 2. 2019: Possible Downtown Alive Entry project or we arrange for Temporary Exhibit—decision needs to be made by June meeting.. 3. 2020: Possible BSSD project as part of our 20th anniversary Other 1. Public Art Commission is collaborative partner with Blue Springs DAR to produce a 4th Grade level History of Blue Springs booklet. Other Partners are BSSD, BS Historical Society and Downtown Alive.
