Minutes of a Regular Public Art Commission Meeting October 9, 2024 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Public Art Commission was held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at 4:00pm at the Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order. Ramon Magee – Present City Council Liaison: Kent Edmondson - Present Taylor Beller - Present Parks Dept. Staff: Mary Herrington Kathy Cornelius- Present Cydney Carl- Absent Elizabeth Owen – Present A motion was made by Liz and seconded by Kathy to accept the Minutes of the September meeting as presented; it passed unanimously. Financial Report. The financial report was available for review. There were no questions 2025 Temporary Art Exhibit - The PAC discussed the 2025 Temporary Art Exhibit. Various locations throughout the City were proposed as possible locations for the art. The PAC decided Moreland School Road from 7Hwy to Liggit would be the best location to hold 3 pieces from Café and 1 piece from Creative Communities Alliance. - The PAC also discussed what the theme would entail. Several themes were presented. After deliberation Liz made a motion to place 4 temporary art pieces for the theme “Wonder” along Moreland School Road for the 2025 exhibit. Ramon seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. - Mary Herrington will work with Café and Creative Communities Alliance to get the PAC on schedule for 2025. 2026 Temporary Art Discussion - Ramon presented the idea of implementing soccer themed pieces of art for the 2026 exhibit in coordination with the World Cup coming to Kansas City. Ramon explained 4 soccer themed pieces along I-70 would be great ways to entice patrons to stop in Blue Springs. These art pieces would be larger than the normal temporary art the PAC gets each year. They would be on 5 ft pedestals and be around 7-8 ft sculptures, with solar lighting. Each piece would cost around $8,000. Because each piece would be higher than the normal temporary art pieces, the City would need to help offset the costs. - Ramon made a motion for Councilmember Edmonson to request additional funding from the City to help pay for 4 larger temporary art pieces in 2026. Kathy seconded the motion, and the motion passed unanimously. Councilmember Edmonson stated he would bring this to the next City Council work session. Status/Information/Updates - Stones have been replaced at “Skateboarder”. - “Lens” replacements have been ordered for Quasarc’s restoration. - “Mother and Child” is no longer suitable for display in an exterior environment due to its internal armature and exterior material. - Ramon made a motion to find a location willing to commit to display this piece in doors. If one year expires without a committed display space, destroy the piece. If a commitment is found, proceed to have Zahner perform the necessary repair of the fractures and cleaning of the piece. Kathy seconded the motion, and the motion passed unanimously. Taylor will take the lead on finding and indoor location for this piece. - G & S has been awarded a contract for the cleaning and Porsoco coating the “Frieze” piece under 1-70 and ADP. Visitors/Public Comment - None Other Business- As there was no further business, a motion for adjournment was made by Ramon and seconded by Liz.
