TTY 7-l-l. Bluffdale Arts Advisory Board Meeting Minutes For Wednesday, November 9, 2016 1. The meeting was called to order at 8:18 pm. In attendance were Laura Garner, Amanda Luker, Angelle Anderson, and Malinda Severn. Lynn Farley arrived at 8:20 pm. 2. MOTION: The minutes from the September 21, 2016 meeting were approved unanimously. Motioned by Lynn and seconded by Laura . Malinda will update and sign the minutes. 3. Linda Brown, the drama teacher at Summit Academy, brought a few of her students to give the Advisory Board a preview of the upcoming production "A Christmas Carol." It will be held at the Draper Campus of Summit Academy on December 13-16. It is an adaptation including puppets . Linda and her husband, an art teacher at Summit Academy, are professional puppeteers. They have trained and performed in many locations around the world . Their talents may be a wonderful addition as we consider new opportunities to bring the arts to Bluffdale. Mr. Brown is also a published playwright and set designer. More information about them can be found at Ii nda lbrown@blogspot.com. 4. Following items were discussed/reported on: a. Christmas Party-A BAAB Christmas party has been scheduled for December 1, at 7:00 pm . It will be held at Malinda's home . Each member of the board will bring a soup to share. Malinda is in charge of invitations and Amanda will bring a game. b. Easter Concert - It was brought to the attention of the board through Cory Luker, that Scott Howell, Stake President of the Bluffdale South Stake, expressed an interest in an Easter Concert including organist Bill Luker. (A similar concert was held in September 2014 with great success.) There are several organ students that may also be able to be involved. Amanda voiced an interest in closing the concert by having the audience members join in singing the "Hallelujah Chorus." The Luke rs will take the lead on this event. They will look at a Thursday in March as a possible date. c. Fund Raising- It was briefly discussed whether or not to sell Wasatch Savings Books from the BAAB website. It was felt that there would be too many expenses to take payments online and pay for shipping each book. Books didn't sell well at "Into the Woods." It was also felt that selling them at "Beauty and the Beast" wouldn' t be a good option because the year would almost be half over. d. Plans/Dates for next year - i. Auditions for "Beauty and the Beast" - January 12-14 ii. Easter Concert - a Thursday in March iii. Musical "Beauty and the Beast" -April 27 - 29 iv. Band Festival -June 24 v. Old West Days -August vi. Teenage Play - August e. Summit Academy Auditorium - The city of Bluffdale has generously donated $500,000 to help build an auditorium at Summit Academy high school. This donation has been matched by an Eccles grant. BAAB is very excited about the opportunities that this new venue will present for rehearsals as well as productions. It is believed that the auditorium will be available beginning fall of 2017 or 2018. f. ZAP Grant - Bluffdale Arts will receive $9000 from ZAP for the upcoming year; an increase from the donation of $7000 the year before. g. Report on production "Into the Woods" - i. The musical cost about $8200 to produce which is less than prior productions. Through ticket, concessions, and t-shirt sa les, we were able to raise about $3800. ii. Some frustration was mentioned about the amount of funds that must continually go to advertising. iii. Overall, the talent of the cast was incredible. It was nice to have the small, intimate stage at Oquirrh Hills Middle, but the sound system had some issues. iv. Malinda will send a thank you note to Dan McCay to thank him for his recent $100 donation and offer comp tickets to the upcoming musical. h. Upcoming Musical "Beauty and the Beast"- The dates will be April 27-29. It will be held at South Hills. Auditions will be January 12-14. 5. New Business: a. Cory Luker presented the idea to create a visual arts display within the new city building. If approved, local artists and reflection contestants would have the opportunity to present and display their work; encouraging the celebration of the visual arts within Bluffdale. Additional suggestions include securing a place within the new building to highlight the history of BAAB, display prior cast photos and advertise for upcoming events. Laura will speak with the Mayor. A tour of the new building is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, November 19th. b. Some pieces of scenery were given to Bluffdale Arts. They include pillars, staircases, an arch and other items. They are lightweight and will be a nice addition. They are currently being stored in Laura's garage . 6. Next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 8:00 pm 7. Meeting adjourned at 9:33 pm. Meeting length 1 hour 15 minutes. Malinda Severn Secretary, BAAB Approved: January 11, 2017
