Veterans Advisory Committee Thursday, October 10th, 2019, 5:30 P.M. City of Bonita Springs 9101 Bonita Beach Road, City Council Chambers Bonita Springs, Florida 34135 AGENDA I. PUBLIC COMMENT No public present V. VETERANS DAY CEREMONY PLANNING The Committee reviewed the Veteran’s Day Program. Changes/additions: Jay Murphy, Chaplain VFW post 4254, will do the invocation. Councilwoman Quaremba will do the Blue and Gold Star banner. Bob Gillette will introduce the guest speakers. Jay Murphy will do closing prayer. Bob Gillette asked Ms. Gilreath to do a press release. Ms. Farrington asked Ms. Gilreath to email the press release to her so she can post it on the American Legion Auxiliary Page. The Committee would like to review the press release before it is released. VI. WOUNDED WARRIOR GAME DAY PLANNING 2|Page October 10, 2019 Veterans Advisory Committee Ms. Gilreath updated the Committee on the Wounded Warrior Game Day Planning. The City has received a $15,000 grant from the Minnesota Twins organization. The City has been asked to host a ribbon cutting ceremony prior to the game. The ribbon cutting will be at 6 p.m. and the game starts at 7 p.m. Members of the Bonita springs little league as well as community partners will be attending. The Veterans Committee is invited. More information will follow as soon as all the arrangements have been confirmed. Bobby Hunter asked who would be singing the National Anthem. Ms. Gilreath replied that she is coordinating with Shelby to sing the National Anthem at both the Veterans Day Ceremony and the Wounded Warrior’s game. Bobby Hunter asked if the fire department will bring out their ladder with the big flag. Paul Canning replied yes. The Post will do the 50/50 as they have done in the past. VII. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING OF September 12th, 2019. Mr. Cline made a motion to approve the September 12, 2019 minutes, Ms. Farrington seconded; motion passed unanimously. VIII. UPDATE ON BRICK SALES Mr. Hunter was not present to give an update on the brick sales. IX. NEW BUSINESS Ms. Gilreath introduced new staff member, Mr. Kiehl Ellison. X. OLD BUSINESS Paul Canning reported that after the two ladies from SALT came to the last meeting regarding the veterans couple living in Imperial Harbour in need of serious home repairs, he and some colleagues from the fire department visited the couple to determine the extent of the repairs needed. Paul Canning stated that after seeing the couple’s home, they agreed with the two women from SALT. Paul Canning stated that, thanks to his coworkers and a donation from the fire department union, they were able to help with about 90 percent of the repairs. Paul Canning noted there are still some plumbing issues that need to be resolved and asked the Committee if they could donate about $500 to help the couple with their plumbing. Paul Canning will need to ask legal because he does not think the money can go to an individual or business. Paul Canning has been in contact has been in contact with the Bonita Bay Veterans organization. The 3|Page October 10, 2019 Veterans Advisory Committee Bonita Bay Veterans organization was in the process of vetting the couple, working with Ms. Taylor in the Communications Department. Paul Canning will contact the Bonita Bay Veterans organization again, because once the couple is vetted, that organization has the money. Paul Canning said he would send the information on Mission United, which is another entity that helps veterans. Ms. Quaremba would like to know what the restrictions are for the funds in the Veterans Committee budget. Ms. Gilreath will bring to the next meeting. XI. NEXT MEETING DATE Next meeting date is scheduled for November 14, 2019. XII. ADJOURNMENT Adam Prentki made a motion to adjourn, Ms. Farrington seconded; motion passed unanimously.
