MEMBERS Braintree Town Council Charles Ryan, Chairman Lawrence Mackin, Vice Chairman Committee On The Department of Public Works Julia Flaherty, member One JFK Memorial Drive Braintree, Massachusetts 02184 November 17, 2020 MINUTES A meeting of the Committee on the Department of Public Works was held in Remote via Zoom webinar, on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 6:30p.m. Councilor Charles Ryan, Chairman was in the Chair. Clerk of the Council, Susan Cimino conducted the roll call. Due to remote participation all votes are taken by roll call vote. Present: Charles Ryan, Chairman Lawrence Mackin, Vice-Chairman Julia Flaherty, member Also Present: Nicole Taub, Chief of Staff James Arsenault, DPW Director John Thompson, Assistant DPW Director/Town Engineer Jeffrey Kunz, Director Trash & Recycling APPROVAL OF MINUTES • None OLD BUSINESS • None November 17, 2020 Department of Public Works Page 1 of 3 NEW BUSINESS • 20 075 Mayor: Request for Authorization to Accept the Provisions of Section 419 of the Acts of 1998, Chapter 194 and the Intermunicipal Agreement For Cooperative Recycling on the South Shore or take up any action relative thereto Nicole Taub, Chief of Staff stated a request to essentially authorize the town’s participation in the South Shore Recycling Collaborative. It follows the theory of safety in numbers presenting greater leverage in recycling and waste management. Jeffery Kunz, Director of Trash & Recycling stated this is correct there is strength in numbers. We have held out in the past from joining but we need to make an investment in the future. We have begun a task force in recycling. The membership fee is $4,850 per year. I request your support. Councilor Mackin asked if we join will this change our day to day operations. Mr. Kunz stated this will not change the operations at this time for at least the first year. Councilor Flaherty asked about cost savings. Mr. Kunz said we have been working with Weymouth and Quincy and we have saved already with joining forces. Councilor Ryan stated this is exactly the type of team approach that will benefit the Town of Braintree. Motion was read by Councilor Mackin. MOTION: That the Town accept Section 419 of the Acts of 1998, Chapter 194, and the Intermunicipal Agreement for Cooperative Recycling on the South Shore, which provide for membership in the South Shore Recycling Collaborative. Motion: by Councilor Mackin to Approve Order 20 075 Second: by Councilor Flaherty Vote: For (3 – Flaherty, Mackin, Ryan), Against (0), Absent (0), Abstain (0) It was unanimously voted to adjourn the meeting at 6:44p.m. Respectfully submitted, Susan M.
