I. Call to Order – The Parks and Recreation Commission meeting was called to order at 6:22 pm
by Chairman, David Akard.
II. Approval of August 9, 2018 Minutes – Susi Chandler made a motion to approve the minutes.
Lea Powers seconds the motion. All in favor, motion passes.
III. Introduction of New Member- Kathy Lowdermilk
IV. Tour of Haynesfield Pool- Prior to the tour Terry gave a brief background on the pool. The
pool was built in 1965-1966 during segregation. Two pools were in place at that time Clay
Pool and Haynesfield Pool. With the exception of the concession stand the building is original
to its construction. A new pump and filter system is much needed. The actual pool coping is
gone, what is present is what has been built up over the years during its annual maintenance.
There are several substantial cracks throughout the pool and water is lost and pumped in all
summer. The pool still has a great crowd but is not serving the community because of the worn
down condition. Mayor Margaret Feierabend requested that a memo with photographs be
drafted outlining the history, figures to repair and cost of operation on an annual basis. She
encourages the commission to advocate for a new community pool. A tour was given of the
entire pool facility.
V. Board Comments: Lea Powers commented on the desperate state of the pool and encouraged
the other commission members to advocate for a new facility. Curt Rutherford advised that he
was glad to be able to see the state of pool as well. Sherry Willinger is glad to have the
opportunity to see the facility up close because many of the issues are not visible until you are
actually in it. Kathy Lowdermilk advised that her 10 year old came a few times this summer
and she feels sad to see the pool in such bad shape.
VI. Next Meeting Date: November 1, 2018
VII. Adjourn: The meet was adjourned by Chairman David Akard at 7:23pm.
