In regard to Project NICE shirts. Change the word much to mulch. May, 2025 Minutes were approved. REPORTS Chair Report ●​ Nothing to report. Staff Update ●​ Shops opened June 6. The flowers look great, with the exception of the ones in the planters that are mounted on the shops, those did not make it. ●​ There were 1.454 views on the Facebook garden recognition post. ●​ The first mural application was received yesterday. It is for a mural on Beach Avenue Barbeque. Liaison Rife will review it and let the commission know if a special meeting will be necessary. Trustee Liaison Report ●​ Beautification projects are continuing throughout the village. ●​ Congress Park flowers were planted last week. ●​ If interested in walking in the 4th of July parade, please see the email from Bob Uphues. Page 2 of 6 OLD BUSINESS​ Project NICE ●​ Overall successful. ●​ People seemed to enjoy planting. ●​ Positive feedback coordinating with the Salt Creek Watershed Network. They stayed and worked until 12:30. ​ Discussion of Landscaping ●​ 31st/Kemman: Liaison Kaluzny questioned if there is still interest in planting more. The Conservation Commission is placing an order, would we be interested in going in on that? a.​ Commissioner Sabourin stated that the west side of that area could use some work. ●​ Commissioner Hedlund asked if the Brookfield Shops used the money our commission provided to them. a.​ Liaison Kaluzny reported that they did use it plus more from their own budget. b.​ We still have $1000.00 in our landscaping budget after approving $5000.00 for them. NEW BUSINESS​ ​ Discussion of Garden Recognition Program ●​ Four nominations were submitted online for June. ●​ One of those nominations was a previous winner. ●​ One does not consent to their home being posted online. ●​ With the small number of submissions it was decided that the commission would vote to select the June Garden Recognition recipient. ●​ Public voting will take place in July if there are more submissions. ●​ The June recipient selected by the commission was: 9432 Henrietta. ○​ Liaison Rife will check that address to make sure it is clear to receive the recognition. ○​ Commissioner Hedlund will deliver the sign, gift card and take pictures to be posted on social media. ●​ The program was promoted by the village, Garden Club and Women’s Club. ●​ It was discussed that the commission should revisit which months to present the Garden Recognition next year. . . maybe consider May for the spring blooms. Commissioner Sabourin suggested May, July and September. This will be discussed at a later date. ●​ It was also suggested that the Garden Recognition Program be promoted in the Brookfielder next year. ​ Page 3 of 6  Discussion of 2026 Brookie Awards ●​ There was discussion about renaming the award because Brookie is a bit confusing to some people. ○​ Commissioner Sabourin suggested Beacon. ○​ Liaison Kaluzny suggested Brookie Business Recognition ●​ Commissioner Jans suggested presenting the Brookie award at village hall rather than at the businesses. ●​ Commissioner Hedlund suggested putting a call out to businesses for nominations. ●​ There will be further discussion at the September meeting. PUBLIC COMMENT ●​ Marie, a neighbor from Arden Avenue, wanted to know more about the Brookie Award. Commissioner Jans explained it to her. She also wanted to know how many Garden Recognition nominations were received for June. ●​ Ed Delong, a community member, participated in Project NICE. He helped with planting at Grossdale Station. He has offered to help our commission in the future because he has time to do so. He is interested in helping with planting at 31st and Grand. ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned at 7:18pm. Brookfield Shops at Progress Park 2.0 Presentation - Kendra and Patrick shared that 400 people attended the grand opening/soft launch. The vendors are going through a series of six training courses, there will be on-site events, and unique programming (such as market trolley, cash for shops, and a punch card). There is a creative grant that was awarded by Cook County for $195,200. This will allow for a creative space for artists and artisans. The recipient is the Brookfield Theater with an expected completion deadline of November 2026. The current desired project scope includes a revamped courtyard, upgraded features (2-3 benches, new entrance signage, enhanced landscaping, larger storage shed, and event equipment), and unique installations (creative art pieces, continued trolley service, a feature wall, solar panels, stage lighting, and art wall options). The budgets are art installation is $7,500 and landscaping is $35,000-$40,000. All is subject to Village approval and then there will be a grant team orientation to finalize the plan and set a timeline. Once set, the plan would be implemented with ongoing reporting and team training. 2. Public Art Mural Application - 3453 Grand Boulevard - Natalie, a Brookfield resident, applied and retracted the application due to the length of the approval process. She discussed the "Call for Walls" process and how sometimes it is time sensitive. The mural that was submitted will be displayed in Forest Park instead. She suggested that the timeline for the application process be shortened, and Trustee Kaluzny will present this to the Village Board and there will be further discussion at the September meeting. Page 5 of 6 3. 2026 Budget Discussion - The Commission is proposing the following: a $10,000 Mural Budget, continue $500 for Advertising and Legal Publication, combine $2,000 Landscaping Services with $6,000 Landscaping and Planting Supplies to be $8,000 under Landscaping and Planting Supplies, continue $3,000 for Program Supplies. Outstanding questions: Will any of the BBC budget be allocated for the Brookfield Shops now that they have a grant? Are the planters going to stay at the Shops or be returned to Grand Blvd? If staying, will there be new planters on Grand? Will the flowers at the new Ehlert Park sign be done by BBC or Public Works? PUBLIC COMMENT ● None ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned at 8:06pm.
