Minutes
1) At 5:34 p.m. the meeting was called to order .
2) Discussion and Approval of Minutes. Motion was made by Ms. Sosa, Ms. Knop seconded, all in
agreement. Minutes for previous meeting passed unanimously.
3) Citizen Comment. No comments were made nor did anyone appear.
4) Board Member Appointment for July 6, 2021. Announcement was made that the board is trying
to get approval for 10 board members
5) Library Report: Jessie Balboa made the following report: Main branch is doing voting. We are
seeing everyone coming in now, we have started our activities; New staff members were
introduced: John Solis, I’m a new maker space adviser here at the library; and Lazaro Castro
introduced himself.
6) Update on Summer Reading Program: Kayla Trevino presented.
7) Update on Grant Applications: Announcement was made librarian that we have been
recommended number 9 on grant applications. We will adopt what has been recommended by
the review board or amend our grants.
8) Taskforce work progress check in: Task force members presented taskforce ideas – With the task
force we met a few times and identified a few ideas. Veronica Guevera and Bertha Pena advised
the board as to the task force’s ideas including volunteer hub, first library card, seed library ,
storybook trail, fine arts enhancements , coding workshops, increased physical signage &
marketing, learning software and info sessions from colleges on certifications. Mr. Guerra loved
all the ideas. Lilia Garcia stated that there is a lot of green space that can be of use to the
community. Mr. Guerra advised that Commissioner Galsonsky was helpful in obtaining a grant
for a pergola to try and install a mini walking trail and outdoor garden area with shade if the
grant is approved. We have 8 acres that we have that we can use. Ms. Pensa stated that using
existing community partners to further these initiatives is the best way to expand. Wants the
task force to piggy back on existing programs and add community element in there. Want the
task to prioritize the goals they have and start implementing them in phases. Task force
members wanted more feedback from the board to see what direction they should go in. Ms.
Pensa advised that they were headed in right direction.
9 ) Adjournment – Motion to adjourn meeting was made by Ms. Sosa; Ms. Knopp seconded meeting
adjourned at 6:30 pm

Purpose: To work hand and hand with library staff by setting goals, objectives, suggesting programing and
services for the Brownsville Public Library System with the community in mind.

Pursuant to Chapter 551, Title 5 of the Texas Government Code, the Texas Open Meetings Act, NOTICE IS
HEREBY GIVEN that a meeting of the Advisory Board of the Brownsville Public Library System will
conduct a Regular Meeting on Monday June 14, 2021 at 5:30p.m., in accordance with Article III, Section 1,
Ordinance 91-1245 of the City of Brownsville.
