Brownsville Public Library System Advisory Board October 21, 2024 Minutes Hybrid Present Absent Guests Chair George Olivo, Martin Chris Pineda, Juan Guerra, Brenda Trevino, Josephine Balboa, Leal, Audria West, Nora Bertha Pena Melinda Clayton, Kayla Trevino, Jose A. Garza, Alisha Hernandez Gonzalez, Lazaro Castro, Beatriz Morales, (Virtual) Jennifer Chavez 1) Call Meeting to Order – Meeting called to order by Mr. George Olivo at 5:30pm. 2) Discussion and Action of Approval of Minutes – Mr. Martin Leal motions to approve the minutes. Ms. Nora Garza seconds. All in favor. 3) Public Comment – No public comment. 4) Library Report a) Adult Services, presented by Jose A. Gonzalez: Mr. Gonzalez begins by reviewing past programs and events such as the Computer Classes, Little Libraries updates, Let’s Get Cookin’!, BTX Healthy Cooking Class, Library Tour, and Career Exploration Virtual Reality. Mr. Gonzalez then reviews upcoming programs for the month of October such as the Adult Computer Literacy Classes, Scary Story Time, and Scary Movie Night. b) Youth Services, presented by Kayla Trevino: Ms. Trevino begins by reviewing programs from the month of September such as Kids Nights: Clay Mosaic, Sensory Friendly Playdate, Library Mini Golf, and the 30th Anniversary Celebration. She shares that for the 30th Anniversary Celebration, the children’s librarians had a few programs during the event such as an author book reading, a make a book activity, and kid create studio. Ms. Trevino shares programs coming up in October such as the Toddler Halloween Dance Party, Kid’s Night: Yarn Spider Webs, Kid’s Night: Halloween Windchimes, Spooky Science Kid’s Night at the Library, and Trunk or Treat. c) Teen Services, presented by Jennifer Chavez: Ms. Chavez shares information about programs from the month of September such as Oyatsu Surprise, Teen Craft Night: Creativity Journal, Teen Anime Night: My Heri Academia movie showing, and Teen Advisory Club: Create Your First Resume. She then shares upcoming programs for the month of October such as Teen Night: Halloween Costume Planning, Teen Craft Night at SM: DIY Alibrijes/Teen Advisory Club/Craft Night, Teen Anime Club: Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and candy tasting, and Teen Cosplay Contest for the Trunk or Treat Event. d) Makerspace, presented by Lazaro Castro: Mr. Castro begins by discussing Sewing Rocks, which is a program that took place in September. He then provides information on programs for the month of October such as Cloche and Exploration Theater. Mr. Castro shares information about the upcoming November program Winter Wreaths. e) Outreach, presented by Jennifer Chavez: Ms. Chavez shares the stats for in reach table for the 30th Anniversary Celebration at the Main Branch Library. She then provides the date for outreach events the library attended such as the Lunada Artisan Market, and the Brownsville Farmers Market. She also shares information on additional outreaches at various schools such as Rivera High School, Besteiro Middle School, and Vela Middle School. Ms. Chavez then provides upcoming outreaches such as Fire Fest, Cameron County Sherriff’s Office Halloween Event, and Vive la Vida!. f) Friends of the Library, Ms. Chavez shares that Ms. Vasquez is unable to join the meeting but has no updates to shares at this time. 6) Adjournment – Mr. Leal motions to adjourn. Ms. Garza seconds. All in favor. Meeting adjourns at 5:58 PM.

October 21, 2024 5:30 PM Hybrid Pursuant to Chapter 551, Title 5 of the Texas Government Code, the Texas Open Meetings Act, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a meeting of the Advisory Board of the Brownsville Public Library System will conduct a Regular Meeting on Monday, October 21, 2024, at 5:30 p.m., at the Southmost Branch Library located at 4320 Southmost Rd., Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas, 78521 and virtually, in accordance with Article III, Section 1, Ordinance 91-1245 of the City of Brownsville.
