Burlington Public Library Board of Trustees Meeting
January 8, 2019
Meeting minutes
In attendance: Sarah Ward, Cindy Lint, Maria Magana, Carol Doyle, Heidi Yeoman.
Cindy moved to approve last month’s minutes. Maria seconded. Motion passed.
Communications:
The December 20 windstorm knocked out two databases: Overdrive (audio and e-books), and
Evergreen (circulation). These were out some time, causing quite a mess, and it is still being
addressed. Burlington’s IT department is looking into the problem in an effort to avoid a repeat of the
problem in the future.
Noon Year’s Eve was a great success, with 80 kids attending from as far away as Stanwood and
Whidbey Island.
Staff day was a huge success. New mission statement: Burlington Public Library inspires,
empowers, and connects our community. Also, a tagline: Circulating ideas. Connecting People.
Plans are in place to work on the strategic plan with community partners. A list of 29 entities has been
generated. Dates for meeting with them will be determined.
Financial report still wonky (but still 2018 data). The budget ended up 97% spent, so we are within
those limits.
Unfinished Business:
Bills: Carol moved to approve the bills, Cindy seconded, motion passed.
Weeds and Discards: Heidi moved to approve the weeds and disc. Maria seconded, motion passed.
New Business:
The 2019 budget is set. It came in just under 1 million.
The surplus ambulance is now the Library’s. It is still parked at the Fire Department (it needs to be kept
plugged in to preserve batteries). There will be training on driving it, fuel cards provided. The exterior
needs new paint or wrap, bubble maker, etc.
We were asked to consider granting a membership to a volunteer with Burlington Citizen Patrol, by
another member. It was felt that it may be a slippery slope, as there are so many worthy people who do
not have cards, and it was agreed by all not to consider it at this time.
The city has begun using new software for tracking hours, Caselle Timekeeping. It replaces
Springbrook.
