September 6, 2022 (via Zoom)
Meeting minutes
In attendance: Cindy Lint, Maria Magana, Sarah Ward, Jenny Cole, Lettie Lance, Carol Doyle,
Maria Yazzolino
Approval of Minutes of August meeting: Cindy moved, Lettie seconded, motion passed.
Communications:
● There has been an influx of new staff: Eleanor Howell-Shryock is our new Children’s
Librarian, Julie Goeman our new Public Services Associate, and Sarah Schwager came
on board on September 1, our new Teen Librarian.
● Events during August included a NASA event with participants able to ask questions of a
real scientist through Zoom; three garden storytimes hosted by Sara Wagstaff of SUOT
Farms and Flowers; Senior Day at the Park saw at least 100 visitors to BPL’s table; and
Rachel Gage, our Cataloger/ILL Specialist presented a flower arranging class to a full
house. This was so popular that future courses are already planned.
● Financial Report is on-track.
Old Business/Monthly Tasks/Updates:
● Approval of bills: Carol moved, Maria seconded, motion passed.
● Weeds and discards: there was a big weed of magazines, and it was wondered whether
these had previously not been included in the list of weeds and discards.
● Policies and Procedures Manual Update is tabled to October meeting.
● Staffing Updates: Eleanor Howell-Shyrock is our new Children’s Librarian, Julie Goeman
our new Public Services Associate, and Sarah Schwager came on board on September
1, our new Teen Librarian.
● Luchamania is slated for September 16, Mexican Independence Day. There will be a
1:00 assembly at the high school, and a 7:00 performance open to the public, also to be
held at the high school. It is hoped to make this an annual event.
New Business:
● Welcoming Library Grant: Sarah applied for, and was awarded, this grant by the State
Library. The focus is on creating a welcoming attitude among the public to new
immigrants to our community (How to Welcome Immigrants), while also helping new
immigrants to integrate into their new home towns. (I’m Your Neighbor). Included are 30
titles of books and materials, and a sturdy and good-looking wooden bookshelf to house
them. The value is about $2,500. Kudos to Sarah.
● The Library of Things is coming along, and we should be able to see some examples at
the next meeting.
