Burlington Public Library Board of Trustees Meeting January 3, 2023 Meeting Minutes In attendance: Sarah Ward, Jenny Cole, Cindy Lint, Lettie Lance, Carol Doyle, Maria Yazzolino Approval of minutes of December meeting: Carol moved, Lettie seconded, motion passed. Communications: ● In December, the Library introduced Winter Reading, encouraging kids to read, as well as hosting two weeks of daily activities (one day was canceled due to weather). These included hosting a Park Ranger, turning the children’s area into a blanket fort, solving a murder mystery, and sharing hot cocoa. Over 60 participants registered for the program. ● Edible books contest saw nine entries. Two new teen volunteers joined. Teen Kindness Club continues, Homeschool Explorers program brought eleven kids to make zines based on their interests. ● Librarian Rachel L. has created an “Accessibility Station,” equipped to serve visually impaired patrons. ● Financials - the library finished out the year having spent 88.52% of the budget. Old Business/Monthly Tasks/Updates: ● Approval of bills: Lettie moved, Maria seconded, motion passed. ● Discussion of weeds/discards/lost and missing ● Forgive bad debts of 2015: Cindy moved, Carol seconded, motion passed. New Business: ● A second Children’s Librarian is included in the 2023 budget, to be hired in July. The City Council would like the library to seek out sponsorships or grants to help with the salary of the new librarian. Sarah is willing to seek out these opportunities, however, this is not common practice for public libraries, and a new Librarian will not be hired should funding not be assured. ● A workshop will be held to discuss possibilities; options such as a part-time position will be considered, however, part-time positions are notoriously difficult to fill.
