City of Campbell Campbell Union School District Campbell Union High School District Moreland School District Meeting Campbell City Hall - Council Chamber 70 North First Street, Campbell, California Tuesday, February 4, 2014 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Purpose: The Campbell City Council has established a high priority to work together with the local school districts on behalf of Campbell youth. The purpose of this and future meetings is to explore where the City can be helpful to the School Districts and where the School Districts and the City can work together. Next step is to coordinate this with Chief Finch. • The schools will film plays, concerts and other shows that Campbell will put on its Civic Center television channel for broadcast. Next step is for Mark Linder to check with Al so we can do this. The superintendents will work to provide the video. • Both the schools and the Youth Engagement Steering Committee are interested in a career/job fair. This would be for summer and year around employment. Next step is for Mark to check with the Chamber to see if they would like to partner with the City. • Opportunities for at risk youth to have college counselors and mentors available. Next step is for Mark to discuss this with West Valley to see if there might be interest. • City employees as substitute teachers one or two days a year. This would be a pilot project. Next step is to determine which employees might be interested and see what classes the schools suggest. • Student of the month interviewed for newspaper or on civic center television. Next step is to develop the idea further. • Schools and YESC would like to have a youth website and a link to the website on the City and Schools websites. Next step is to discuss further with the YESC and see who will host this site. • Utilizing school pools for additional swim lessons. Westmont is open to the idea, but need to see if there is sufficient demand and staff. • Address the achievement and information gap among students. Some students lack the money necessary to purchase computers or other technology. Also, need to help parents understand Common Core and how it is different. Also need to help with internet access. Next step is to further develop this issue and see about possible partnership between schools, Comcast/ATT, City. • Align City and Non-profits services to youth with the Common Core. Next step is for City to set up a meeting with Recreation staff and program providers, SW YMCA, Los Gatos-Saratoga Recreation District, San Jose PRNS with school staff to get a better understanding of Common Core and how our programs can be supportive. • Set a Council Study Session on Common Core.
