Uh, before we begin I want to take a moment... take a moment to reflect on the loss, terrible loss, that we suffered as a nation over the last few days. And, let’s take a moment of silence, please. PRESIDENT SCHULMAN: Absolutely. Member Smith. MEMBER SMITH: Thank you so much. Mr. President, on last week in Georgeview Estates we had an issue with a resident’s home that was no longer in the home. I’d like to thank J.R. and his team for going out to assess the area, and since then it has been cleaned up and it will be further taken care of until it is sold at this particular time. So, I want to thank J.R. for going out and we taking care of it. Thank you. PRESIDENT SCHULMAN: Well, and great... great work by you too, Member Smith, for doing that, getting that done. BECKY BORS: Becky Bors, Canton, Ohio, 3223 Market Avenue North. Good evening, Mr. President, Members of Council. I’m here tonight to represent Maria Byington of the Arcadia Grill. And basically just wanted to thank the recognition that was so much bestowed upon her this past First Friday. She was also mad (chuckles), because she doesn’t... she doesn’t like the accolades. We love her dearly, but she tends to like to stay beneath the radar. But I am here tonight on behalf of her to say thank you very much, and as Maria would say, “kiss, kiss.” Thank you. (Applause) PRESIDENT SCHULMAN: Thank you very much. Well deserved. Our next speaker is Brenda Baylor. No? MEMBER SMITH: You know what, Mr. President. She’s in a meeting in regards to chip and seal right now. Do you want me to get her, or.... how... what do you want me to do? PRESIDENT SCHULMAN: It depends on what she wants to do. Does she want to address us tonight? We’re more than happy to wait. It’s not gonna take that long. (Brief pause) MEMBER SMITH: She’ll pass (inaudible). PRESIDENT SCHULMAN: Okay. Our last speaker then is Pete DiGiacomo. Mr. DiGiacomo, as always welcome to Canton City Council. If you’ll give us your name and your residential address, please. PETE DIGIACOMO: My name’s Pete DiGiacomo. I live at 600 Dent Place SW, Canton, Ohio. Uh, a couple things I’m here to talk about. You raise the sewer rate for the people of Canton. The people of Canton had no say about it. You just took, you know, did the vote, passed it, that was that. Now you want to give $175,000.00 to the Chamber with no strings attached. I don’t know how you can give somebody $175,000.00 and they don’t have to show what it’s gonna be used for, show what they used it for later down the road. To account where the money goes for, blah, blah, blah. Are there other groups that are getting the same treat... privilege... treatment? Other words, the City gives them X amount of dollars, they don’t have to show anything for it. Take the money, do what you want with it. That’s not the way to do it. Right now the City’s in debt. You’re not gonna get out of debt as long as you keep giving money away. City Council, I... you folks sitting up here, is this the way that you run your personal lives? And I don’t want to know, but it’s like if this is the way you run your households, you won’t have a house very long. It... it... it just doesn’t work that way. If we had good times like we had X amount of years ago, there’s nothing wrong with giving money here, giving money there. It’s a bright thing to do, and it’s good for the City, good for the people of the City. But when the City says they’re going to have a deficit, in other words, they don’t have... have the money at the end of the year, and you’re still giving away money. Doesn’t seem like, you know, that’s... those two things go together. So the last remark I’m gonna make is what I actually got to do. I know we’re not getting much money from the State, I’ve heard that, and I agree with him, with the folks that are saying it. Hopefully, if they ever decide to, you know, do something, we’re gonna see the fruit of the labor or, you know, maybe Mr. West can shake the tree and get some money for us. I don’t know. Last thing, stop the madness, quit giving money away. You’re giving money away that you don’t have to account for. Thank you. PRESIDENT SCHULMAN: Thank you very much, as always.
