PUBLIC SPEAKS PRESIDENT SHERER: We are now under Public Speaks and we have two speakers tonight. Our first speak... speaker is James Parker. Mr. Parker, if you would please, step forward and give us your residential address. And I’d like to remind you that you have three minutes. JAMES PARKER: Thank you, Mr. Sherer. I am James Parker. I reside at 630 Penny Street Southeast... Southwest in North Canton. I’d just like to say that it is different without Allen Schulman here. He’s a great, great man. As we say in Greek, a (pronounced) “Ka-low-a vray-oh.” With that being said, I’m here to speak tonight about Alan Page Way. Justice Page Way was an idea I came up with in 2011 that I broached with Councilwoman... the Honorable Councilwoman, Chris Smith, and now Representative and then Councilman, Thomas West. It was turned down, but I feel that good things come to those who wait. As you see, this great man is definitely worthy of honor. He’s just recently been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest medal that can be bestowed upon a civilian by the United States Government. Yet here when we read The Canton Repository, what do we read in the crime reports? Alan Page Way, Alan Page Way... Alan Page Drive, I mean. There’s some starter kit of a playground up there that still lacks swings while a perfectly good medal swing set fits... sits there, basketball rims with no hoops and bent down and so on. To me it’s a sin of omission. I wanted to get here in February for Black History Month. In lieu of that I’m here now. Justice Alan Page, Minnesota Vikings, the Bears, Central Catholic, the records, the accolades. I could go on but it would use up my entire time. My idea is to take a section of the Martin Luther King Corridor and call it Justice Page or Justice Alan Page Way. I started this idea with Ralph Hay Way that took a year and a half to get across to you folks. I don’t know why. Now we have Maria’s Way. Why can’t we have a Way in honor of a black man? Uh, I distinguished black man would bring a lot of class to the City. I would distinguish the MLK Boulevard, making it greater than not lesser than. I can see no reason to be against this idea, and I demand that a committee get formed and promulgate this idea and move it forward. I’m tired of hearing no about it. Truth, justice and the American way. I... I don’t know what to tell you. You know, I had the Football Heritage Corridor that I brought to your attention. An idea that you turned down that was signed into law by the Governor of Ohio, the former Governor. Perhaps you should consider my ideas more carefully, and give them the serious consideration they deserve. Being passed over I don’t mind, but Alan Page deserves recognition, and until this town gives it to him, you can expect me back here time and again. I don’t care if it’s eight years. I don’t care if it’s twenty years. Till my dying breath, Justice Alan Page deserves credit in Canton, Ohio. Mr. Green, would you please step forward and give us your residential address, please. BILL GREEN: Yes, my name is Bill Green. I reside at 9345 Paulding Street NW, Massillon, Ohio 44691. Uh, thank you, Council President and Council Members. It’s an honor to be able to speak with you this evening. March is National Disa... Developmental Disability Awareness Month, and I wanted to come and share the work that the Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities is doing on behalf of the 3900 people with disabilities that live within Stark County and the 1616 people with disabilities that reside in the City of Canton. Our mission is to be... to support people with developmental disabilities and their families, and our vision is that each one of them will be fully included within our community. However, there are still attitudinal barriers that people with disabilities sometimes still face. So in March we provide extra effort in getting the word out about the people we support and the benefit they bring to our communities. Each year we are working with 700 families that have an infant with disabilities. This work takes place in each of their family homes. Each year we provide preschool and school age education to over 180 students with significant developmental disabilities and complex needs. Each year we fund the services and support of over 1600 people so that they can live, work and play within our communities. We are a funder of these services. We’re a planner and coordinator of each person’s life plan, and we monitor the 115 agencies and 200 independent providers that provide their services and make sure people are getting what they want and need. Finally, we work in conjunction with the Sheriff’s Office and the City of Cou... uh, Canton Police to make sure people are healthy and safe. During this month we want you to know our name and be able to refer... refer anyone who is need of our services to us. We want you to know that Stark DD is a trusted partner that thousands of local people rely on. We want you to know that Stark DD provides vital services and high quality support to a steadily increasing number of people with disabilities. We are serving 30% more people than we were a decade ago. Ultimately, we want to give each person with a developmental disability a good life. And we, working with the City of Canton and our other communities, we know that we can bring this to fruition. Thank you so much for your time. And have a great evening. PRESIDENT SHERER: Thank you. PRESIDENT SHERER: Member Minor Smith. MEMBER MINOR SMITH: I have two items for Miscellaneous Business. One, I would like to acknowledge that it is Women’s History Month and acknowledge Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for over 106 years being politically active and involved starting with the Women’s Suffrage March in 1913, with the anniversary being yesterday, March 3rd. But also with my excuse... with my request to be excused for next week because I, along with members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority throughout this country, will be at the Nation’s Capitol talking to senators and congress members for their particular areas of the State. So for... on behalf of the State of Ohio, I will join with other members of Delta Sigma Theta to talk to Mr. Portman, Mr. Ryan, as well as Mr. Gibbs. And so I welcome any comments, suggestions, questions that City Council Members have because we are specifically talking about issues that address gun reform, the upcoming census in 2020, as well as some other specific subject matter. So if you all have questions or concerns that you would like me to present while I’m there next week, please let me know. And Member Smith, if you could, accept this as my request to be excused for next week, as well as the Council Staff. And I bring this before City Council because he was a dedicated, committed member of the City of Canton, and even after death wanting to return here to be buried. He was a committed employee of the Ford Plant here in Canton, graduate of Timken High School, as well as Case Western Reserve. So, thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to share about my uncle, Etheridge Smoots. Thank you. PRESIDENT SHERER: Thank you, Member Minor Smith.
