SW, Canton, Ohio...52 years. Yeah! Um...first of all, Jim Adams (Applause) and his crew cleaned up the tires! Yeah, cleaned up the tires and I want to thank him...I wanted to thank him for that. The other thing is, last week, brought up about a tandem axle snow plow truck. I’m not sure what the price is, I’ve heard two different prices. One’s just over $240,000.00, the other’s $270,000.00. For $270,000.00 you can get two of the regular snow plows, I believe, or pretty close to it. The...the snow plow in question, that I’m talking about, uh...it’s got a very, very large plow out front. That’s good. It also has what’s called, flangers, what come out from the sides. We don’t live in Colorado. We don’t live up in Northeast uh...Main or something like that, we live here in Canton, Ohio. I’ve seen tons of snow every year, over the years, and that is overkill. Completely overkill. Buying that, if you want to buy it, I got some swamp land I’ll sell any of you...okay. It’s...it’s...it’s too much money. The vehicle is not gonna be used the way it should be used and we do not get that much snow, once again. So, why we would spend that much money for a single plow when we could possibly get two. I realize this is a big, big dump truck with a big plow, you got the flangers on it....uh...you know. The city has money, but you know, be a little frugal. Think first before you vote yes. SERVICE DIRECTOR HIGHMAN: Yes sir. MEMBER SMUCKLER: Um...what is a...snow plow normally cost that is not a tandem and not a pickup truck? SERVICE DIRECTOR HIGHMAN: The standard snow...uh...snowplow trucks that we buy can rage anywhere between $170,000.00 to about $210,000.00. MEMBER SMUCKLER: And this is going to cost us how much? SERVICE DIRECTOR HIGHMAN: The exact quote is between $247,902.00 and uh...I was the one who misspoke earlier in a...a...off the record conversation about the dollar amount we just got off the capital budget and I didn’t have the exact quote in front of me, so that’s where the $270 number came from. So, that was my mistake, for the record. MEMBER SMUCKLER: ...And this will plow two lanes instead of one lane, and normally we put like a Market Avenue, the trucks side by side and there plowing two lanes at a time, using two vehicles, correct? SERVICE DIRECTOR HIGHMAN: Yes sir. This truck specifically...uh..the intent of this truck is for a Route 30 or Route 62, which Route 30 being the preferred truck. This particular vehicle has pre-treating capabilities of three lanes, and the ability to plow two lanes. At it’s worst, we might have up to three trucks on Route 30, the idea being not only do we defer our trucks some place else, but we save on a COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS JOURNAL 107 JOURNAL PAGE -133- MINUTES OF THE MEETING MARCH 25, 2019 driver. MEMBER SMUCKLER: So, we’re saving on a driver besides the wear and tear on a second truck. SAFETY DIRECTOR HIGHMAN: Yes. Sir. MEMBER SMUCKLER: Um...and this will leave this driver to be able to do...in the neighborhoods then...or somewhere else like that? SAFETY DIRECTOR HIGHMAN: Yes, sir, depending on the... MEMBER SMUCKLER: Um, one of the things that always disturbs me, as long as I’ve been here, is when we do have snow, and it isn’t often, I’ll grant you that...if you go into North Canton and you go into some of the other areas, we don’t plow it as fast as they do. Now, we all know about lane miles and we all know about how much equipment we have and what the fine lines is between all this, but if we can get more bang to do this with less people, and cover more ground...Pete, I love you, but I think I’m going to buy some swamp land on this one. PETE DIGIACOMO: I’ll sell it to ya. MEMBER SMUCKLER: Thank you. (Laughter). PRESIDENT SHERER: Member Morris: MEMBER MORRIS: Yeah. Director, uh...question. Can this truck be used on... say...Market Avenue? DIRECTOR HIGHMAN: Yes sir, it could be used on like Market or Tusc, or Cleveland...I wouldn’t necessarily...I talked to Superintendent Trzcinski...it wouldn’t be one you would wanna take down a narrow road or an alley, but it could be used elsewhere. The reality is, when a snowstorm hits we’re going to start on 30 and we’re going to end on 30. So that’s why when I commented last week that this truck will probably, most likely, remain on 30 because that’s where we start and where we end. We start on the highways. MEMBER MORRIS: Director, how long does it take us to plow 30, because based on just driving 30 myself, it...it’s about five miles of highway. And that would be from Trump Rd., just out past Raff Rd. (Inaudible)....call it a Township. SERVICE DIRECTOR HIGHMAN: Well, depending on...I do not...I cannot answer the exact time off the top of my head, but when you look at the number of lanes, and if you’re in an active snow event, you’d be going back and forth. So, when the snow stopped, you would obviously move the truck into a different area. You would not use the wind plow and you would not be doing the, the other items...so, yes, to answer your question, it can be used elsewhere, um...that’s at...during the actual snow event, we do remain on the highways to keep...to make sure they aren’t slick. So, it depends on the weather, it depends on the (Inaudible), how cold it is, and all those types of things. MEMBER MORRIS: Thank you, Director.
