PUBLIC SPEAKS PRESIDENT SHERER: We are now under Public Speaks and we have two speakers for this evening. I’d like to remind our speakers that you do have three minutes. And…Veronica...could you please state your full name and uh…when you get up to the podium, please. Could you please state your name…your full name and your full address, that you live at, please. VERONICA EARLEY: My name is Veronica Early. I live at 1627 Rowland Avenue N.E. and I’m hear about what happened last…at last week’s meeting. I’m here to address last week’s meeting and the blatant, unprovoked attack on me, by Council Chair, William Sherer. At that meeting, when you proceeded to try and put us all in our place, letting us know that we either fall in line with his agenda to suck it up, shut it up, and…and be glad it wasn’t you…this time, or he’ll do to us what another town (Inaudible) North Canton has done to its citizens, taking away the remainder of the small rights and freedoms we have left. The nerve. You then proceeded to say, “You would not tolerate any loud outbursts or disrespect of any kind, while speakers are at the podium.” Saying that the “rebel rousers will be thrown out.” But here’s where it gets tweaky. The first speaker was at the podium. I looked first…I looked toward my friend, Skylark, and just happened to notice Skylark whispering to a person beside her. William had nothing to say. The speaker finished. Skylark then went to…went to speak, I leaned over and whispered in…in um… my sister’s ear. William, you became so angry. Belligerent. Disrespectful. You were…you interrupted Skylark. You…it came out of your own mouth that no outburst or disrespect towards anybody. But you were so disrespectful to me, interrupting her speech. It was you who became so loud, angry, and it was just totally…out of…out of control. Uh…you said, uh…and I don’t understand this because I’m a fully grown woman. I’m educated, I’m an educated Black woman. I’m probably older than you. But that…but yet…um…and I handle all my responsibilities, and yet you felt the need, as a white man, with your white privilege, you felt it was okay to speak to me, a black woman, with such disrespect. It was just offensive the way you talked to me. You were a bully and a tyrant, trying to intimidate me and anyone else, into silence. Using the same old tactics they used from the beginning of time, for…from the first black man was hung from a tree. The shut up, don’t speak about it, don’t acknowledge it, just pray it ain’t you next. Remember what the government did to Billie Holiday, when she sang Strange Fruit? Wasn’t any difference than what William did or did…was trying to do to everybody here last week and he did do to me. He said I was a disruption with my loud outburst of whispering in my sister’s ear. Calling an officer to come and escort me out of a public building that I pay tax dollars for. In fact, I pay your salary, sir. And all of you, all of you others seated up there, you saw; you knew; and you felt how wrong he was but you sat there and said nothing. So, the questions I ask the audience, everyone in this room, think about it. If they won’t stand up and speak out in public, in a public forum, when clearly, anyone could see that William was abusing his so-called power, do you really think they’re gonna speak behind closed doors when police officers are abusing theirs. Like the young folks say, the math ain’t math. Please Williams, please make it make sense. Not only to me, but to all of this audience and all of these people that pay your salary. PRESIDENT SHERER: Thank you for coming this evening. Our next speaker is Ms. Skylark Bruce. Ms. Bruce, could you please state your name and residential address, please. SKYLARK BRUCE: My name is Skylark Bruce and I live at 2216 Bollinger Ave. NE. At the beginning of Public Speaks last…at last week’s meeting, Council Chair, William Sherer, had specific instructions for those present. He was emphatic that no loud or disruptive behavior would be welcome. He mentioned the recent limitations on Public Speaks at City Council meetings in nearby municipalities as though as what happens in North Canton has any relevance to what happens in Canton. While Ms. Kim Bell spoke, I whispered a question to the person seated next to me. This received no notice from Sherer, so it was presumably not loud or disruptive. When I got up to speak, I was stopped a few line in by a loud and disruptive William Sherer. He observed that my friend, Veronica Jamie Early, had made some kind of comment and proceeded to throw her out of the meeting. I was unaware that Ms. Jamie had said anything, and if she did, it was certainly not disruptive. But Sherer spent several minutes loudly berating Ms. Jamie for her supposed infraction. In addition, I was incredibly disappointed that no other members of Council stepped in to address this abuse by Sherer. If these decorum rules were being enforced fairly, where was my lecture and removal from the meeting for having done the same thing as Ms. Jamie, a few moments prior? Sherer’s the one who was out of line and inconsistent at that. The obvious explanation for this is racism. It looked like a power play. A demonstration of control over people. People who attempt to limit what others say are usually afraid they might hear the truth. It’s also a defining feature of racism. First Amendment Right to free speech and the ability of the voting public to address their elected representatives are not privileges afforded by William Sherer. They are enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Sherer runs a meeting, not a country. All of this is additional proof of the disregard that public officials of this city hold for the concerns and very lives of Black residents. I keep hearing that Council Members are scheduling meetings to talk with police bosses to review policy. There is no reason why reviewing policy would have to wait until after the Grand Jury decision. That could have been happening since April when John Gabbard became Chief. This administration could have been ready with changes, as needed, however the Grand Jury decided. We, as residents of this city, don’t have forever. More of us are likely to die or be permanently harmed at the hands of police officers waiting for dithering officials to have meetings. But while you are meeting, start with the 8 Can’t Wait policies and the department’s practices on addressing celebratory gunfire and police brutality. PRESIDENT SHERER: Thank you Ms. Bruce.
