Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission Meeting Minutes May 18th, 2023 This meeting of the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission was held on January 19th at the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Administrative Office. Chair Wigginton called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. ANNOUNCEMENTS The following announcements were made:  The meeting is being recorded.  Meeting information for this Commission, along with provisions for public access, is posted on the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission web page.  Essential business of the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission is being conducted during this meeting. Members Present: Homer Babbitt, Jon Berry, Nathan Croslin (Vice-Chair), Joy Naik, Kim Painter, Adrianna Rivera, Rose Ward, Lisa Wigginton (Chair) Members Absent: Daniel Booth, Michele Catalano, Efrem Graham, Barbara Harrington, Catherine Magill, Angelo Reyes Staff Present: Mike Barber, Joe Ruthenberg ROLL CALL Joe Ruthenberg called the roll. Attendance reflected a quorum with 8 voting members present, and 7 voting members absent. MINUTES: Approval of Meeting Minutes: November minutes were distributed and approved. Introduction of new Commission member Dr. Rose Ward REPORTS: a. Committee Reports: Fundraising/ Budget/Long Term Events: A. Chesapeake Arts Weekend, Commissioner Berry recapped some of the details of the art show.  Grants Bay Youth Orchestra $3,000 Operational Grant Chesapeake Civic Chorus $2,000 Project Grant Coastal Virginia Chamber Music $2,000 Operational Grant Governor’s School for the Arts $5,000 Project Grant Mosaic Steel Orchestra $2,500 Project Grant Shark City Drums $3,000 Operational Grant Tidewater Arts Outreach $3,000 Operational Grant L.A.M.B.S Foundation 0 Tidewater African Cultural Alliance $2,000 Project Grant Tidewater Community College $10,000 Project Grant Tidewater Winds $3,000 Operational, $5,000 Project Grant Upbeat Music Foundation $ 1,700 Project Grant Utopia Feni 0 Virginia Arts Festival $15,000 Project Grant Virginia Children’s Chorus $3,000 Operational Grant Virginia Opera Association $3,000 Operational Grant, $2,000 Project Grant Virginia MOCA $5,000 Project Grant Virginia Stage Company $3,000 Operational, $2,000 Project Grant Virginia Symphony Orchestra $3,000 Operational, $6,000 Project Grant WHRO $5,000 Project Grant Young Audiences of Virginia $5,000 Project Grant Arts for Learning Zeiders American Dream Theatre $775.00 Operational Grant A motion was brought for each organizations recommended amount, seconded and approved unanimously by the commission.  Public Art/ Individual Artists – o Public Art – The bylaws have been reviewed by a City Attorney and are awaiting approval by City Council, most likely in June. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:  No updates. NEW BUSINESS:  No updates. CITY BUSINESS:  The new Gold Star memorial is completed and will be dedicated at a ceremony on Sunday, May 28th at 1:00 p.m. at the new memorial site near the 9/11 Memorial. ADJOURNMENT: 2 The meeting was adjourned at 7:49 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be on Thursday, July 20, at 6:30 pm at the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Administrative Office, 1224 Progressive Drive.
